Adasi is the 2013 outing of long-time Adasi Music's composer/synthesist Chris Wasko, who continues her exploration of contemporary, genre-blended instrumentals, smoothly meshing world rhythms and memorable cool jazz melodies with splashes of classical and new age ambiance.
Listener favorites include “Best Wishes,” an easy-going chill out piece with koto and flutes over a solid, accessible groove of retro beat drums and world percussion; and “Sandal Dance” the upbeat, energizing joy of guitar and piano interplay that can’t help but make you feel good. “Portals,” is set in the subtly syncopated, broad landscape of cool jazz, featuring a sparse trumpet melody of repeated notes, yearning for the octave musical voyage. The trumpet is transformed in two other pieces: “Serene Air,” a beautiful reflective mlelody, accompanied by violin over new age tranquility; and the quirky, sleuth-like fun of “Catching Fireflies,” playing off the violin.
Chris doesn’t shy away from experimenting with textures and colors; like harp and hammered dulcimer in “Green String” with a moody bass, or “Near Clouds,” a new-age air with childlike playfulness and classical cello touches. Spicy “Distant Scent” also brings a sizzle to a seductive jazz guitar front that leads to a trio bridge featuring harp, dulcimer and piano counterpoint.
Chris travels effortlessly between genres, from the opening, easy synth groove of “Skip Stone” through the dreamy film-scoring theme of the title track, “Adasi,” floating amidst heavenly strings, to the inviting Americana of “Claire’s Afternoon” that transitions to an unexpected poetic and impressionistic piano solo.
With Adasi Music, Chris Wasko shows her melodic world jazz flair infused with coaxing dissonances and inspired instrumentation that is engaging, memorable and continually innovative; a gem of contemporary and smooth global fusion.
