GARY SMULYAN - Smul’s Paradise (Capri 2012)

Five time Downbeat Poll winner Gary Smulyan brings his baritone sax to the forefront of the classic jazz organ trio with Mike LeDonne on organ, Peter Bernstein on guitar and Kenny Washington on drums. Most of the tunes are originals written for the date by Smulyan along with 3 compositions written by and for the late great jazz organist Don Patterson. Gospel inspired organist Rhoda Scott's Pistachio and a funky uptempo waltz version of the 60's pop hit Sunny round out the session.

"Smul's Paradise features some first-rate music, while showing off another facet of Smulyan's musicianship and filling a musical void left open by many baritone saxophone bearers of the past and present. Smulyan and company succeed on all fronts here, making this a sequel-worthy session."  DAN BILAWSKY/allaboutjazz.com
