Noah Preminger: "Before The Rain" (Palmetto Records 2011)

Track Listing: Where or When; Quickening; Before the Rain; Abreaction; Until the Real Thing Comes Along; K; Toy Dance; November; Jamie.
Musicians: Noah Preminger: tenor sax; Frank Kimbrough: piano; John Hébert: bass; Matt Wilson: drums.

His CD features Preminger with pianist Frank Kimbrough, bassist John Hebert, and drummerMatt Wilson, and is marked by a sense of adventure and exploration, but even greater lyricism, compositional depth, and group interplay. An album of ballads is not what one usually expects from a young player on his second release. But by defying expectations, Preminger created one of the most powerfully beautiful discs of the year.

Here's what a few folks have to say:

"... impressive, challenging, and beautiful." - Kevin Lowenthal, Boston Globe

"... luxe melodic improvising... in the theme of his own 'Abreaction,' playing slowly over Mr. Wilson's fast and quiet free-rhythm drumming, he designs a different kind of sound for each note, an individual destiny and story."  - Ben Ratliff, The New York Times

"His sound is informed by everybody but beholden to no one. Which makes him continually unpredictable, and continually satisfying." - Jon Garelick, The Boston Phoenix

"Before the Rain is essentially an all-ballads album, but it's also more than that. The repertoire and approaches are subtly varied, the constant being a near-obsessive respect for melody...Without compromising, Preminger could attract an audience wider than the small circle of jazz aficionados. He only has to be himself." - Chris Kelsey, JazzTimes

"... another major gift to the jazz world... a distinguished disc sure to seize attention for his evocatively melodic style... Playing with the grace and expressiveness of a jazz veteran, the young man with a horn mixes cool restraint with emotional depth and old-fashioned poetry with contemporary bite... distinctive voice as a saxophonist and composer." - Owen McNally, The Hartford Courant

Editor's Pick: "Before the Rain is marked by the same sense of adventure and explorationas Preminger's 2008 debut CD Dry Bridge Road, but with more compositional depth and group interplay. The tempos never rise above medium, but the creativity and passion remain extremely high." - Ed Enright, DownBeat

"... his very hip band have a way of making plenty happen." - Jim Macnie, The Village Voice

"4-stars: a superbly flexible quartet, full of adventure, individuality and light and shade.  Preminger is a bit special." - Ray Comiskey, Irish Times

"Preminger is just 24, but already he has a distinctive sound: a confident, husky tone, combined with fleet, sometimes fragmentary phrasings: something like Sonny Rollins channeling Leo Konitz." - Fred Kaplan, Stereophile

"Believe the hype; he is the real deal... Before the Rain is a knockout." - Alan Young, Lucid Culture

"Before the Rain is a statement of musical freedom... fresh, true and uniquely original." -Saxophone Journal

"4-stars: I haven't been this impressed with a young musician for a long time." - Duncan Heining, Jazzwise

"4-stars: His second CD is a gem, highlighting his gorgeous tone and patient ballad playing." - Chris Smith, Winnipeg Free Press
