Roman Stolyar, Vladimir Luchansky – Duets “Duets” is a collaboration of two most active members of Siberian community of musicians and improvisers. Luchansky and Stolyar played together for some years, mainly in groups organized by Siberian new jazz patriarch, Sergey Belichenko. Together they played with well-known improvisers who visited Novosibirsk: Assif Tsahar, Oliver Lake, Glen Hall, William Parker. That is why at the time of duet album recording the musicians were сo-ordinated perfectly and spoke the same language, even multiple-languages of contemporary free improvisation. Inquisitive listener will find different things in the music of duet: radical “non-idiomology” originating from Derek Bailey, meditative modality, minimalism, sonorous techniques and bright melodic lines. All pieces from the album contrast sharply with each other, but at the same time they are the parts of unified whole, as from a fancy curls of pattern imprinted on the window on a cold day, revealing a fabulous picture of exotic Siberian nature for many people. Ballister – Mechanisms (Clean Feed 2013)
Personnel:
Dave Rempis (sax), Fred Lonberg-Holm (cel), Paal Nilssen-Love (d),
Dave Rempis, Fred Lonberg-Holm and Paal Nilssen-Love present their association as a“free-wheeling trio” and that means everything. It means, for instance, aspecial attention to the process of music making, and this one deals with improvisation – jazz-flavored, for sure, but free in its creative resources. In the very powerful listening experience provided by “Mechanisms”, you’ll immediately identify those resources: driving grooves, noisy textures and occasional melodic interjections. Some of the references are in Julius Hemphill’s bands with cellist Abdul Wadud, in Ornette Coleman’s Prime Time, and in the electric Miles Davis groups of the seventies. But a distinguishing feature sets this band apart: these are the sounds of contemporary Chicago. Even if Nilssen-Love comes from Norway, he’s very much connected to that broad-shouldered sound through his frequent, varied, and long-standing collaborations with Chicago musicians. This common aestheticis what unites them; the rest is inventiveness, musicality and instrumental virtuosity.

Benoît Delbecq – Crescendo in Duke (Nato 2013)

Charles Gayle Trio - "Street" (Northern Spy 2013)
The post New Thing lineage is a sacred thing. In the fields sown by Ayler and Coltrane and Sanders and Shepp, the music is free and flowing without ego but with purpose. It’s a judgment call of course, but the proponents are arguably few. Without attaching too many words to it, it’s a style of playing that’s something spiritual, something other, a connectivity between the players and with the listener. And without overly delineating who’s in and who’s out, it’s certain that Gayle is a master of the form. Deeply committed to free improvisation and the jazz tradition in all its manifestations, Gayle is a blazing saxophonist, a fluent pianist and, has more recently been playing the double bass. Here he is heard at his best, in classic form on the tenor horn with an exhilarating trio.
The title and cover here evoke a character Gayle took to portraying onstage back in the 1990s, a bit of social commentary using the familiar face of a sad clown (read Emmett Kelly or even Charlie Chaplin), using a tragic face with no comedic angle to reflect on his own homeless days. But the music within is all new, recorded in the studio this year with Gayle heard on tenor exclusively joined by longtime timekeeper Michael TA Thompson on drums and Larry Roland on bass. To say that he recalls the pilgrims of free jazz is no small praise, but it’s not to lock him in the past. At 72, Gayle remains a vital force. The Streets are paved with some serious intention.
