Barcelona, SPAIN: Ken Vandermark's Made to Break at Arco y Flecha

Made to Break
KEN VANDERMARK, saxo tenor y clarinete.

Kate McGarry -Girl Talk (Palmetto Records 2012)

McGarry's sense of musical authenticity is beautifully blended with her always-original musical vision. --Don Heckman, The Los Angeles Times
With a voice that soars with abundant hope, Kate McGarry creates music that makes you sit up and take noticea modern jazz singer who is redefining the genre with a compelling body of work. --Icon Magazine
More concerned with the essence of a song than idiomatic limitations, Palmetto Records vocalist and Grammy® nominee Kate McGarry has managed to attract the attention of tomorrow's jazz fans. Beyond her obvious affinity for swing, an eclectic repertoire ranging from Irving Berlin to The Cars and her signature contralto convey a message with a crystal clarity that precludes the need for gimmick or effect. All that's left is undeniably honest music that transcends the boundaries of age or genre. With five records including the Grammy® nominated, If Less Is More ... Nothing Is Everything, she's established herself as one of contemporary jazz's most moving and enigmatic voices.

Jim Holman, Richie Cole, Frank Catalano - Explosion! (Delmark Records 2012)

Jazz pianist Jim Holman explodes on this straight ahead blowing date, his debut as leader. As a native of Chicago, Jim Holman has been performing in the city's finest jazz clubs since he was sixteen. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh's jazz studies program under the tutelage of Jazz Messenger alums Nathan Davis and Leon Dorsey. Jim has performed in Chicago and Pittsburgh with outstanding jazz icons such as Mark Whitfield, Claudio Roditi, Donald Harrison, Antonio Hart, Jimmy Owens, Cecil Bridgewater and John Moulder. Jim has also performed and recorded with Ira Sullivan. Explosion! was recorded at two separate quartet sessions also featuring Rick Shandling, Rusty Jones and Brian Sandstrom. / Delmark Records

Lena Swanberg - The Art of Staying Young and Unhurt (Diesel Music 2012)

"Lena Swanberg’s background is in the jazz scene. The songs on the debut album move between dramatic pop, bluesy moods, and fantasy-like soundscapes, all rooted in the singer-songwriter genre. The debut is produced by Göran Petersson (who has earlier produced Sofia Karlsson and Jeanette Lindström). Some harmonies lean towards pop music while others towards jazz and blues. Sometimes there are mystical subtleties that lead one to think of Nina Simone if she would be a 29 year old Swedish girl. By all rights Lena Swanberg and her producer Göran Petersson have created their very own musical universe" Read more @ Lena Swanberg website
