(1)  JEREMY STEIG (SEPTEMBER 23, 1942 - APRIL 13, 2016)

The jazz flute community suffered a profound loss with the passing of Jeremy Steig in April.  (…I myself was a little late in finding out about this… :-(

I have always listened to - and I continue to listen to - Jeremy’s debut album, Flute Fever.  This album was originally released on vinyl over 50 years ago (in 1963) and was finally reissued on CD for the first time in 2013 by Jonathan Horwich of International Phonograph Inc.  The new Legacy Recordings release of Flute Fever includes the original unedited takes, all of which have all been meticulously remastered, with the original cover art, liner notes and a previously unissued take.

I covered one of the tracks from Flute Fever ("Willow Weep For Me") on my album, Mercy, and its inclusion was prompted by - and the track was specifically dedicated specifically to - Jeremy because, since childhood, I had been inspired by Flute Fever.

You can hear my take on "Willow Weep For Me" here (a duo cut from Mercy with Robi Botos on piano):

I tried to find a link on the web of Jeremy’s version of "Willow Weep For Me" (so that you could have a listen to it too) but I simply could not find one.  So you will have to settle for Robi’s and mine for now!  However, you CAN get the entire Legacy Recording reissue of Flute Fever here (…and any serious-minded jazz flutist would be well-advised to do so…) here:

(2)  NINA SIMONE - "BE MY HUSBAND " - LIVE

This is pretty powerful…So brace yourself!… (It’s about three minutes.)

(3)  …AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT…

I know this is a bit off-topic but, for any cat lover (like me), this clip of a cat watching a horror movie is absolutely priceless! :-)

If you haven’t seen it before, then it’s well worth a minute of your time to do so.  And even if you have seen it before, then it’s well worth another minute of your time to watch it again! :-)

Here it is:
