trio \ DEF (Drouin/Eagles/Froman) performs and composes contemporary/modern jazz that reflects a broad range of influences from free improvisation to more composed forms, from atmospheric soundscapes to more earthy expressions. A compelling ensemble sound rooted in late-sixties/early-seventies experimentation fused with European-style texturalism. Among their influences: Gateway (Abercrombie/Holland/Dejohnette), Miroslav Vitous, David Torn, Tony Williams’ Lifetime, Terje Rypdal.

Formed in 2012, trio \ DEF has been featured at university concerts, masterclasses & live radio/internet “simulcasts", in addition to jazz festival appearances. Showcasing musicians born & raised in Canada’s national capital, the three busy player/educators are currently based in New York City, Montreal & Ottawa. Thanks to support from the City of Ottawa, trio \ DEF has released their debut recording on the TetraArtist imprint.

Montreal-based bassist Marc-André Drouin attended the Berklee College of Music (Boston). While in Los Angeles he worked with Andy Grammer, Vinx (Sting, Rickie Lee Jones), Kofi Baker (Ohm), Chuck Morris (Arsenio Hall, Marcus Miller), and Preston Smith (Cocktail soundtrack). In Montreal he has performed and/or recorded with Nannette Workman, France d'Amour, Kim Richardson, and Marie-Hélene Thibert among others. A versatile musician proficient in many styles, he has toured the USA with Cavalia and France with Véronic DiCaire.

Wayne Eagles is known for his unique guitar style, which incorporates diverse influences from textural soundscapes and free jazz to old school fusion and progressive rock. Wayne has played live and in the studio with a long list of local and internationally known musicians including Billy Kilson, Ken Rosser, Rob Frayne, Mike Milligan, T Bruce Wittet and Adam Nussbaum. At home in Ottawa, he is a performance instructor and ensemble director at Carleton University. Recordings include REGALS - The Double-Duo Sessions (TetraArtist, 2011), Milligan-Eagles Project (TetraArtist, 2005) and How's Now? (Carleton Sound, 2000).

Ian Froman is based in New York City and instructs at the Drummers Collective, New School University & City College. An associate professor at Berklee, Ian toured and recorded with saxophonist Tommy Smith being the perfect foil in energy, spirit, and ferocity for the rising jazz star. Ian's work with Miroslav Vitous was acclaimed in the jazz press, as are his recordings/concerts with Rick Margitza and Sheryl Bailey. A founding member of Metalwood, Ian has freelanced with John Abercrombie, Jerry Bergonzi, Michael Brecker, Gary Burton, Marc Copland, Larry Goldings, Mick Goodrick, Larry Grenadier, Dave Holland, and Dave Liebman.
