The biggest project yet in our efforts to build a
younger, broader jazz audience: multifaceted shows featuring Karriem
Riggins+ERIMAJ!
At CapitalBop, we believe strongly that jazz isn't an old, faded art –
it's beautiful music that stays spontaneous, alive, and engaged with
the world around it. We've presented dozens of "D.C. Jazz Loft" shows
over the past few years, reaching thousands of D.C. area listeners, and
we've seen the positive effects of great improvised music: It brings
people together, reminds us of our collective history, and yet
encourages us to live firmly in the moment. Modern jazz is some of the
most exciting, immediate music out there, and it's built around genuine
interaction.
So this June, at the DC Jazz Festival, we're putting on our most ambitious series of shows yet – the 2013 D.C. Jazz Loft Series – aimed at really integrating jazz back into the creative community of D.C. We're presenting young national headliners like Karriem Riggins, ERIMAJ, and Gerald Cleaver, who are bridging the gaps between jazz, hip-hop, rock and electronic music. We're also bringing in an absolute legend, the German saxophonist Peter Brötzmann, who helped pave the way for today's avant-garde. At this series, we're working with movers and shakers in the visual art world, plus chefs and mixmasters from around D.C., to create a really immersive experience that goes beyond a typical jazz concert. And we're hosting all three concerts in nontraditional spaces, where the music and energy can flow freely.

We are bringing musicians from all over the country and the world, and presenting them in non-traditional venues. So the biggest risks and challenges are, inevitably, logistical: Will we be able to get the musicians here on time, without hiccups? Will the spaces be well furnished and prepared for a concert? All we can say is, the only way to avoid these snares is to secure appropriate funding. We need to be able to pay for any incidental travel and lodging costs, and we need to purchase sound equipment, seating, lighting, and other essentials.
All the money that's donated here will go directly toward these sorts of expenses, plus paying the musicians.
