The title of Fabiana Passoni's first album in English "Dim The Lights" is a good indication of the softly toned atmosphere of the album which contains seven covers of legendary pop hits once made famous by Minnie Ripperton, Olivia, Newton-John, Lou Rawls, Michael Jackson, Rufus & Chaka Khan and The Carpenters.
Not only that her sensitive voice adapted beautifully to these songs, but supported by exquisite arrangements and musicians, she gives them a fresh sensuality infused by her native Brazilian personality, everything in perfect match with the emotional mood of the lyrics.
From the first track, her connection with the songs is clearly evident, the personal touch she puts in each of them, sounds so natural integrated with the original, that all these hits live a new melodic life going beyond the English lyrics. Her voice is so expressive painting feelings and moods, that anything she sings transcends the barrier of language.
"Lovin You" preserves the grace of the original song, a melodious "Magic" continues the Brazilian breeze in a higher register, followed by a lively jazzy orchestrated "You'll Never Find". "Lovely Day' is the most intimate song of the set showing a superb balance between voice and instruments. Surprisingly Michael Jackson's "Rock With You" becomes a joyful radiant bossa, while on "Ain't Nobody" the singer adds a soft dramatic inflection. Carpenters's hit "Close To You" ends this delightful album on an unforgettable magical note.
