On Sunday, September 23, jazz lovers and supporters will unite to celebrate the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz and its annual International Jazz Competition. Event hosts Herbie Hancock, TS Monk and Billy Dee Williams will honor Madeleine Albright for her longtime support of jazz and the Institute. Performers will include Geri Allen, Patti Austin, James Carter, Nnenna Freelon, Jimmy Heath, Ingrid Jensen, Lee Ritenour, Wayne Shorter, and many more (as of August 15). Special guests include Chris Botti and Aretha Franklin. George Duke will serve as the Musical Director.
The celebration, sponsored by Cadillac, is part of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, the most prestigious jazz competition in the world. Three talented jazz drummers will compete for a chance to win a $25,000 scholarship and a guaranteed recording contract with Concord Music Group. This year's prestigious judging panel includes Carl Allen, Brian Blade, Terri Lyne Carrington, Peter Erskine, Roy Haynes and Ben Riley.
All proceeds support Institute education programs in Washington, Los Angeles, New Orleans and around the world.
