12TH STREET JUMP PUBLIC RADIO’S WEEKLY JAZZ, BLUES & COMEDY JAM PRESENTS ITS ANNUAL CHARLIE PARKER CUTTING CONTEST

12th STREET JUMP
PUBLIC RADIO’S WEEKLY JAZZ, BLUES & COMEDY JAM
PRESENTS ITS ANNUAL
CHARLIE PARKER CUTTING CONTEST
Calling All Sax Players: Show your improvising skills and win a guest appearance on public radio’s weekly jazz, blues and comedy jam, 12th STREET JUMP.  Prize package includes a trip to Kansas City and the chance to play on 12SJ's family of twenty-five public radio stations around the country, including WDNA in Miami, KCUR in Kansas City and BostonFreeRadio.com.

Back in the 40s and 50s, Kansas City jazz musicians would challenge one another to cutting contests, to see who had the hottest riffs and best technique. The Bird got his start in sessions like this-- practicing for ten or more hours a day until he had the chops to take on KC's best. That tradition returns on Parker's birthday, as 12th STREET JUMP hosts a cutting contest on its August 23rd show (airdates: Aug 25-Sep 1).

To enter the contest, sax players should submit a sixty second video in which they are featured playing and/or improvising on a Parker standard like “Cherokee," “Donna Lee," “Now Is the Time,” or some other jazz standard. Videos must be uploaded to our facebook page or on our website at www.12thstreetjump.org.  12th STREET JUMP listeners will vote for their favorite saxophonist. Musical Director Joe Cartwright and the 12SJ staff will listen to the top five vote-getters and select a winner.  Currently, there are fourteen contestants from around the world who have received more than 4,000 votes.

Winners will receive roundtrip airfare for two to Kansas CIty and four nights at the historic Phillips Hotel on 12th Street--down the street from where Basie tickled the ivories and Big Joe Turner shouted the blues. The August 22-26, 2012 trip will include an appearance on our syndicated public radio show, visits to local jazz clubs and tickets to a KC T-Bones baseball game, the National World War I Museum, the American Jazz Museum, the Mutual Musicians Foundation (where Parker met Dizzy Gillespie and some say be bop was born) and Schlitterbahn Waterpark. All of that plus some great barbeque awaits the winner of this year's Charlie Parker Cutting Contest.

12th STREET JUMP is distributed over Content Depot and PRX and can be heard on the following stations weekly (times are in each station's time zone):
