Kjell Öhman - The Duke (Prophone 2012)

Kjell Öhman, piano; Hans Backenroth, bass; Joakim Ekberg, drums

This Swedish, splendid jazz trio here plays jazz classics such as Kelly's Blues (Oscar Peterson), The Duke (Dave Brubeck), My foolish heart (Victor Young/Ned Washington). Also included is the tune Shanna by the Swedish bass player and composer Georg Riedel.

Pianist, organist, composer, arranger and bandleader - Kjell Öhman may well be Sweden's most versatile musical personality. For the better part of fifty years his wide-ranging musicality has adapted itself to the most varying contexts. It seems that there is no genre with which he is not familiar, though he is happiest when he is seated at the piano, exploring traditional Oscar Peterson territory. But the fact that he has been inspired and influenced by Oscar Peterson certainly does not mean that he has slavishly followed the master. Kjell Öhman has gone his own way and has developed a highly personal style in which technical and harmonic aspects go hand in hand. He is one of that exclusive band of musicians who can exploit their instrument to the full.
