Italian sensational jazz violinist touring Australia and New Zealand with his quartet


From May 17 to June 3 Italian jazz violinist Luca Ciarla will be touring Australia and New Zealand with his unique quartet featuring Vince Abbracciante on accordion, Nicola Di Camillo on double bass and Francesco Savoretti on percussions.  

The itinerary will include some of the most prestigious festivals in Oceania such as the Melbourne Jazz Festival and the International Manawatu Jazz & Blues Festival in New Zealand, international concert series like SIMA (Sydney Improvised Music Association) or the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Penrith and various performances in some of the best jazz clubs in Queensland and New South Wales.

 The tour is produced by Violipiano Music in collaboration with Rodger Fox & Associates and the Italian Cultural Institutes of Sydney and Melbourne. If last year had ended with great concerts and tours in South Africa, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Germany, Switzerland and Austria, 2012 smiles again to the Italian violinist from Molise Region.

In fact only this year he will perform in Australia, New Zealand, United States, Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, Macao, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Finland, with concerts in some of the biggest festivals in the world such as the Melbourne Jazz Festival. BIOGRAPHY

Luca Ciarla is simply one of the most creative and surprising violinists nowadays. His music easily transcends the boundaries among genres to trace an innovative musical path, a magical acoustic seduction in perfect balance between written compositions and improvisation, traditional and contemporary sounds. His unique style has led him to successfully perform in countless festivals and concert series of jazz, classical and world music festivals in more than thirty countries on every continent; from the National Arts Festival in South Africa to the Java Jazz Festival in Indonesia, from the Esplanade in Singapore to the Italian Institute of Culture in New York, from the Academy for Performing Arts of Hong Kong to the Perth Jazz Society in Australia, from the Al Bustan Festival in Lebanon to the Adriatico Mediterraneo Festival in Ancona (Italy), from Jazz in Bayreuth in Germany to the 55th edition of theSplit Summer Festival in Croatia. “Luca Ciarla has wooed the classical, jazz and folk crowds with his originality.” Cover Magazine (Hong Kong)

A native of Termoli, Italy, Luca began playing violin and piano at the age of eight. By twelve he was studying at the conservatory and few years later began exploring also jazz and improvisation, inspired by artists such as Keith Jarrett, Egberto Gismonti and the Turtle Island Quartet. He received the Diploma di Violino in 1993 and then studied at the Fiesole School of Music and the European Union Music School of Saluzzo. In 1996 Luca moved to the United States to pursue a master’s at the Indiana University and to study jazz with David Baker. Subsequently he completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Arizona where he has taught violin and improvisation for several years. Winner of several competitions in Italy and abroad, in 1999 he has been awarded by New York-based Chamber Music America.

Luca Ciarla has recorded with several record labels (Egea, Alfamusic, Felmay, Camjazz, Incipit, Violipiano) working with classical, jazz, folk and even rock musicians such as Greg Cohen, Daniele Sepe, Joshua Bell, Edgar Mayer, Daniele Scannapieco, Danilo Rea, Sylvain Gagnon, Anthony Fernandes, Andrea Piccioni, Simone Zanchini, Lello Pareti, Marco Siniscalco, Marina Rei, Blaine Whittaker, Mimmo Locasciulli, Luciano Biondini, Fabrizio Bosso, Sergio Cammariere, Rodolfo Maltese, Paola Turci, Waleed Abdulhamid, Luigi Tessarollo, Ferruccio Spinetti and many more. Founder of Violipiano Arts, an art production house born in Hong Kong in 2001, Luca is also the artistic director of prestigious international events.
