Penang gets jazzy next month with headliners from abroad and home for the Penang International Jazz Festival. Subhadra Devan has the updates
A balmy wind. The smell of a salty sea. Mix that with rhythms and melodies which stir the mind, and your soul gets really mellow. Jazz by the beach in Penang beckons again for the eighth time, this Dec 1 till 4. The world-class performers for the Penang International Jazz Festival include Grammy nominated Ulf Wakenius, who will be performing with son Eric for the first time, the Espen Eriksen Trio, and the Amir Yussof Acoustic Project.
Local artistes include the Az Samad Duo, comprising guitaristcomposer Az Samad, who has performed in the United States, Austria, Britain, Singapore and in Malaysia. The versatile musician has appeared on 13 CDs (five of which are his solo releases), and has worked with GrammywinnersFlacoJimenez and Max Baca, guitarists John Stowell, Stuart Ryan, Teja Gerken, world music ensemble Bogofusion and electronic jazz-funk group Planet Loop, among others.
