Joshua Redman and Brad Mehldau Launch European Duo Tour
Pianist Brad Mehldau and saxophonist Joshua Redman, longtime friends and frequent collaborators, head out for a duo tour of Europe, starting with two shows in Spain this weekend: at the Teatro Central in Sevilla tonight and Teatro Fernán Gómez in Madrid as part of the Madrid Jazz Festival. From there, the two make stops in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, and Luxembourg, with a return to Spain at the end of the month for a final tour stop at the Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival.
The European tour comes after a brief duo tour of the United States last month, which Mehldau and Redman will pick up again in the spring, following three duo shows in Australia in January. Mehldau has a number of solo gigs ahead as well, plus some special group shows, including a pairing with Joe Henry at Wigmore Hall in London on December 2, the culminating concert of Mehldau's two-year jazz series there, and, the next night in Bilbao, a trio show with bassist Joe Martin and drummer Jorge Rossy, an original member of the Brad Mehldau Trio.
All five of the original Art of the Trio records made by the Brad Mehldau Trio, featuring Rossy and bassist Larry Grenadier, will be released on Nonesuch in a new box set with an additional disc of previously unreleased material, on December 6. The Art of the Trio Recordings: 1996-2001, saysJazzwisein a preview of the new release, offers "a decade’s worth of perspective, on a trio that rocked the foundations of jazz at the time going through a snoozy trough and desperately in need of a groundbreaking trio to live up to the storied trios of the past." Pre-order now in the Nonesuch Store.
