The BuJazzO (Bundesjazzorchester), Germany’s Youth Jazz Orchestra, sponsors qualified and talented jazz musicians under 24 years of age in Germany. As an institution involved in the musical training of young people, it is one of its kind and unique worldwide. It is mainly sponsored by the Federal Government of Germany and run under the auspices of “German Music Council” in Bonn. In November 2011, on an eight city tour in India, the BuJazzO concerts promise new musical and cultural encounters. This ensemble of young German jazz musicians will invite leading exponents of South Indian music - legendary figures and virtuosos from the Karnataka College of Percussion, R. A. Ramamani, T.A.S. Mani, Karthik Mani and master percussionist Ramesh Shotham. The programme will include compositions by Ramamani, Louis Banks and Charlie Mariano.
The BuJazzO, winner of the 1997 German Music Prize, has given over 400 concerts, undertaken fifteen international tours and produced numerous broadcast recordings. Volumes 1 to 10 of the orchestra’s own CD series have appeared in addition to many individual BuJazzO CDs. Since 1988, over 3000 applications have been received from rising musical talents and nearly 400 of them have played in this unique ensemble. One of the aims of the BuJazzO is to give a substantial, resonant boost by way of many and varied actions designed to promote young jazz players. As an outstanding ensemble, it plays an exemplary role in the prolific youth jazz scene in Germany as well as around the world.
