CHILE: Jazz festival comes to iconic fruit market in Chilean capital

Santiago’s principal fruit and vegetable market, La Vega, will host a jazz festival on Friday and Saturday this week, beginning at 7 p.m. each night and featuring six local bands.

The sprawling market is a hub of activity, with hundreds vendors shouting out their wares to the large crowds of locals who come from all over the capital, and is a must-see for visitors to Chile’s capital.
The festival is part of a recent string of events aimed a bringing art and music to the popular site, which have included exhibitions of paintings and performances of “cueca brava” -- an urban twist on the traditional Chilean dance.

This weekend’s line-up includes a mix of traditional and innovative jazz bands, ranging from well known pianist Don Valentín Trujillo, who plays traditional songs from the likes of Frank Sinatra, to the “postmodern” outfit Jazz Killer Show, whose performances include elements of cabaret and cinema.
