The Hotel Akron's Matthews was closed in 1978 but has a long history behind it. Jazz musicians such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Count Basie used to stay here during the time they were playing in the nightclubs of the city. The monument 15 feet tall will look like the entrance to the hotel and it will integrate an original barber pole. Many local firms contributed with funds to the construction of the monument.
