JAZZ FROM FINLAND 2011
Fimic's new jazz compilation, Jazz from Finland 2011, is now released. As with the previous editions, the new publication combines a compilation cd with a comprehensive book about the current issues of Finnish jazz. The new promotional publication will be mailed to jazz professionals around the world within the next few weeks, and it will be also distributed in the future music fairs and exhibitions.
The booklet includes six articles by well-known jazz journalists. The introductory article is written by British jazz professor Stuart Nicholson. Jan-Erik Holmberg, also a co-editor of the book, writes about the infrastructure of Finnish jazz, as well as about the big band scene in Finland. The article of Matti Nives looks into the Finnish club jazz boom, and Petri Silas explores the stylistic aspects of the Nordic Tone in his contribution. Ole Nerdrum's article maps the musician's perspective to Finnish jazz scene, with interviews of two prominent saxophonists, Mikko Innanen and Eero Koivistoinen. In addition, the booklet includes presentations of all of the artists featured on the compilation CD.
The CD itself consists of 13 tracks of contemporary Finnish jazz. The styles vary from the avant-garde end of jazz to nostalgic big band music, covering several important musicians and bands. The artists include: Kari Ikonen & Karikko, Timo Lassy, Juhani Aaltonen Quartet, Pepa Päivinen, Tokka, Aki Rissanen, Emma Salokoski & Ilmiliekki, Ricky-Tick Big Band, Plop, Sun Trio, Kalle Kalima & K-18, Mikko Hassinen, and Verneri Pohjola.
