The release of “A Second Chance” introduces the music world to Dorothy Leigh, a powerful new singer with a soulful voice, very expressive style, and ability to interpret lyrics in a meaningful and heartfelt way.
She grew up in a musical family, which included her older sister who sang with Dionne Warwick and other artists. “I grew up in a large family. We used to sing duets and background behind each other. I loved Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Dionne Warwick and Barbra Streisand. My dream was to be an accomplished singer.”
As a child Dorothy sang, and took piano and violin lessons; however, her life went in a different direction. After attending Long Island University and Adelphi University, she found herself working in the corporate world, which did not allow much time to sing, but she did perform every chance she got.
Dorothy’s opportunity to pursue her dream came two years ago, when she was laid off from her job of more than ten years. A pharmaceutical error led to severe medical complications, which found Dorothy in the Intensive Care Unit, fighting for her life. At a cross roads in her life, she returned to her first love, singing.
Her debut work, entitled “A Second Chance,” captures the essence of her amazing talent and reflects the emotional depth and breadth of her life-altering journey. Dorothy worked closely with producer Alva Nelson, who years earlier had been her pianist. Nelson composed some of the songs on the CD, arranged all of the music, and chose the musicians and background singers. Studying with and working beside Juanita Fleming and Janice Robinson, Dorothy was now ready for the world to experience her gift.
On “A Second Chance”, Dorothy, who is the CD's executive producer, performs ten songs, including three originals by Alva, five by Juanita, and two by Janice. The style is an adult contemporary hybrid of jazz and R&B. “All three of the songwriters knew that I could bring their songs to life,” says Dorothy. “The lyrics can really touch people's lives. We were also very fortunate to have worked with some of the very best musicians in New York.”
Throughout A Second Chance, Dorothy displays a most beautiful sound along with a swinging and soulful style. A Second Chance will rocket Dorothy into the domestic and international spotlight. Clearly, Dorothy Leigh has a great musical future. Dorothy looks forward to her upcoming release on August 26th, through her record label Whitley Productions who also sponsors some of her performances.
