Hankyoreh: You have sung pop, jazz, bossa nova, folk and many other genres. Is there a particular genre that suits you well?
Lisa Ekdahl: When I write music in Swedish, I work within the Swedish music tradition, which is a heritage I’m proud of carrying on. I learned singing in English from listening to jazz albums and performing at jazz clubs when I was a teenager.
I guess my voice is soft and I like to have a lot of space in the arrangements. Whatever genre I’m playing that’s one of the most important ingredients in my music.
H: You were active for many years, and yet this is your first live album. Was there a reason that you didn’t release a live album before? How did you make a decision to release a live album now?
E: The Olympia show was the final night of the extensive tour we did around the release of my last studio album “Give Me That Slow Knowing Smile.” When the idea came up to record and film the Olympia show it immediately felt right to record and film that particular show. During the process of making the film it developed from being “only” a concert DVD to a music documentary containing other aspects of the musical process. Now felt like a natural time to celebrate and share this.
