Saint-Emilion Jazz Festival 2013
La cité médiévale reste l’inspiration première de ce mariage entre la musique et le vin. Cette union demeure irrémédiablement marquée par le sceau de la qualité, celle des vins qui sont produits ici, et celle des musiciens qui se produiront durant le Festival.
La grande scène de la Douve du Palais Cardinal, accueillera de nouveau les plus grands noms de la musique contemporaine. La salle des Dominicains, dans un cadre plus intimiste et propre à la rêverie, recevra des pianistes de renom, dans le cadre du cycle des Pianos Solo. Le site du Parc Guadet recevra cette année, sur une toute nouvelle scène, treize concerts, entièrement gratuits, à l’occasion du Festival Off. Vous pourrez par ailleurs vous restaurer et goûter les productions locales, midi et soir, tout en appréciant des artistes de talent dans une ambiance conviviale.
La joie, le bonheur, les émotions, ressentis lors de la première édition, nous ont incités à reconduire cet événement. La vieille cité a vibré pendant 4 jours et chaque participant a pu éprouver une atmosphère tout à fait particulière qui s’est dégagée de spectacles forts et intenses. Nous vous accueillerons
du 18 au 21 juillet avec la même ambition de vous émouvoir et de vous faire partager des moments inoubliables, dans un cadre unique et exceptionnel.
Telle est notre volonté et celle des habitants de Saint-Émilion, dont les châteaux garderont leurs portes ouvertes afin de vous faire découvrir tous les mystères et les charmes de ce village.

Federico Ughi-Federico Ughi Quartet (2013)
I
was born in Rome and raised on the melodic traditions of Italian folk
and classical music. The same strong sense of melody is present in
Ornette Coleman’s music and I have been a great admirer of his work ever
since I discovered it in my early 20's. I have since had the good
fortune to study with Ornette and to get to know him personally. He has
had a strong influence on me spiritually, philosophically and as a
composer. This group started as a saxophone-bass-drums trio but soon
evolved into a two horn-bass-drums quartet, inspired in no small part by
Ornette's great success in using this same format to deliver strong
melodies in his early career.
In addition to delving into the melodic universe, this album is an exploration of the line between being an improviser and a composer. This question has been a dilemma for me for many years. I had always thought of composition and improvisation as being two radically different approaches to experiencing music. However, with this album I have found my own balance between the two. I feel that this is a musical project in which I am able to experience the freedom of improvisation while still being able to stay true to the composition. I believe that this is due to the fact that this group plays together so frequently and is made up of strong improvisers whose personalities come through in the music.
Being a drummer and not much of a singer I have to rely on others for these melodies to manifest outside of my head. I am very thankful that David, Kirk and Max are part of this band and are helping me in this search for the experience of hearing back and sharing these sounds that keep coming to me, that talk to me year after year. It's hard to compare the feeling of hearing a melody that has been with you for a long time and one day having it played, performed and recorded. It's something like the realization of a dream.

They don't just happen, but we have to actively do something to ‘make’ them, since they will stay with us for the rest of our lives, continuing to shape, change, and enrich us,” says Vana about his new CD ‘Making Memories’ to be released by ENJA RECORDS on June 11th, 2013.
German-born, Boston-schooled, New York-based pianist Vana Gierig uses his music as a language – one of eight languages he masters - to communicate these kind of messages. Called a “piano phenom” by Keyboard Magazine, Vana creates his unique sound as much thru his writing, as thru his style of playing and improvisation. At the core of his projects is always his piano trio, originating from one of those early ‘memories’ he ‘made’ when, at age 12, his parents took him to hear the Oscar Peterson Trio, which started a recurring childhood dream in which he himself was the one playing the piano on that stage.
