Ilia Skibinsky-The Passage (Mythology Records 2012)

All original music rooted in jazz with each track influenced by a different style such as modern classical, cinematic music, Middle Eastern, Jewish, Far East, Balkan and more. The concept of the album is to present jazz in its various forms and beyond.
This album is a compilation of compositions that were written over the course of the last decade. Some of them were written as long as 11 years ago while others were composed very recently. The concept of the album is to present compositions which will differ in style from track to track while maintaining unity through jazz language and improvisation.

Track 1 and 2 comprise a two part piece, which with the lack of a better definition would be described as modern jazz with various Latin influences in the tradition of Chick Corea, Michael Brecker and others.
Track 3 is a composition based on Jewish and Klezmer rhythms and motives.
Track 4 is a downscale arrangement of a symphonic classical piece adopted for a standard jazz quartet + a string quartet.
It has strong influences of modern cinematic music.
Track 5 could be described as modern jazz which would be heard in the last decade by such artist as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner and others.
Track 6 has influences of music from the Far East an features Indian percussion instruments.
Track 7 is modern Jazz with subtle hip-hop influences.
Track 8 is influenced by a mix of Middle Eastern, Russian and Balkan folklore.
Track 9 is a straight ahead jazz ballad.

While all the compositions differ vastly in style, they are deeply rooted in jazz and the intent was to create a seamless flow through harmonic language, structure and improvisation. The emphasis is on elaborate forms and the order of the tracks has a significance since certain compositions are a direct continuation of the one that comes before it through the use of similar musical material in a changed state. This record is a journey. It is The Passage.

About the Artist:

Saxophonist, Pianist, Composer and Producer - Ilia Skibinsky has been described by his peers and colleagues alike, as someone who possessed the unique ability to navigate through an array of musical styles, while maintaining a unique voice. Born in Russia, he immigrated with his family to Israel in 1993. While in Israel, aside from regularly performing with the elite of the local jazz artists, Ilia participated in some of the top scale productions such as the Israeli adaptations of the TV shows “American Idol” and “Dancing with Stars” which aired on nation wide prime time TV as well as full Broadway productions of “Chicago” and “Guys & Dolls” at the Bet Lessin Theater.
In 2007, Ilia relocated to New York. Since his arrival he had the chance to share the stage with such artists as Joanne Brackeen (Art Blakey), Bobby Sanabria, Larry Graham (Sly and the family stone) and many others. In 2008, Ilia has been invited to play with one of the productions of the world-renown Cirque Du Soleil on their show entitled “Corteo”. He performed as a saxophonist and keyboardist with the production in US, Canada and Japan completing over 500 shows. In September 2011, Ilia performed at the prestigious Colonial theater (Berkshires, MA) in a program that featured his original compositions written for a classical chamber ensemble.
Mr. Skibinsky compositional and production works for TV have been featured on PBS and Discovery Channels.
Ilia has been awarded a scholarship from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation Award (AICF) for 4 (four) consecutive years.  cdbaby

 

Gabriel Vicéns - Point in Time (2012)

The exciting and critically acclaimed debut album from guitarist/composer Gabriel Vicéns featuring legendary bassist Eddie Gómez (Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Steve Gadd) and the outstanding tenor saxophonist David Sánchez, both Grammy Award winners.

World-class musicians join Vicéns in his discographic debut, such as legendary bassist Eddie Gómez (Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Steve Gadd) and tenor saxophonist David Sánchez, both Grammy winners. He's also joined by sax player Jonathan Suazo (Paoli Mejias); pianist Eduardo Zayas (Charlie Sepulveda); Australian-born, New York-resident bassist Matt Clohesy (Seamus Blake, Alan Ferber, Jon Gordon) and Mexican-born drummer Vladimir Coronel. All of them are amongst the most sought-after musicians in the local jazz scene in Puerto Rico and New York.

All the tunes on the CD were penned by Gabriel Vicéns. “This record has a lot of energy, as well as a natural, pleasant melodic inclination”, says Vicéns. “It's in a ‘modern jazz’ vein, but at the same time it uses many elements from diverse musical genres. I think it's one of those records that should be listened from beginning to end, since all the themes follow a structured order”.

Gabriel Vicéns started seriously delving into music by the age of 14. His growing passion for jazz began at the age of 16, and just a year later he started playing in local clubs with some of the best local jazz musicians. After completing high school, he received an Outstanding Musicianship Award and a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music but instead he decided to go to the Music Conservatory of Puerto Rico to complete a Jazz Performance Major in Jazz Guitar. As a student, he had the opportunity to play, learn, and grow friendships with Miguel Zenón, Eddie Gómez, Kenny Werner, David Sánchez, Jon Faddis, Bill Boris, Charlie Sepúlveda, Danilo Pérez, Luis Marín, Fernando Mattina and Paoli Mejías. In 2010 he graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Conservatory as the first jazz guitarist. “Point in Time” is his first album as a leader.

New Orleans 11th Annual Swing Dance Festival Honors Marriage of Jazz Music and Dance

Learn to dance, witness swing battles and hear New Orleans’ greatest bands at the New Orleans Swing Dance Festival and Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown.

Swing dancers and jazz fans from around the globe will gather in New Orleans, LA Thursday, Sept. 27 through Monday, Oct. 1, 2012 as they transport to a time when swing was king and everybody danced for the 11th annual New Orleans Swing Dance Festivaland Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown.

"Hoping to honor the timeless marriage between jazz dance and live music, our festival includes dance lessons, dance competitions, outdoor concerts, a second line parade, parties and more," says Event Director Amy Johnson. "We really try to make this an event for all ages and all dance levels."

The event kicks off Thursday evening with a free pre-party at Maison with music by The Shotgun Jazz Band. Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, the world’s best swing dancers compete in exciting events set to the tune of New Orleans’ best dance bands.

Working in conjunction with the French Market, the New Orleans Swing Dance Festival and UltimateLindy Hop Showdown will host free outdoor concerts on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday featuring two outdoor dance floors and swing dance shows. Afternoon concerts will feature Aurora Nealand’s Royal Roses (Friday), The Jazzsmiths featuring Cristina Perez (Saturday), and Showarama Hot Jazz Trio (Sunday). Sunday also features a free-to-enter Intergenerational Dance Contest at 1:45 p.m. Couples must have a 30-year age difference and can sign up prior to the contest at the French Market dance floor.

Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. - 1:15 p.m., the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park will host dance classes in Lindy Hop, Blues Dance, Traditional Jazz and Balboa-Swing, taught by international instructors. Classes are for all levels and take place at The Old US Mint. All daytime events are free and open to the public.

Friday night’s after party takes place at The Wax Museum with music by The Smoking Time Jazz Club, Saturday features a party at Generations Hall with music by the Showdown All-Stars led by Ben Polcer featuring Meschiya Lake, and Sunday night dancers will gather at Generations Hall with Meschiya Lake & The Lil Big Horns. After parties on Friday and Saturday are held in partnership with the Old US Mint and will be held from 1:30 a.m. – 4 a.m. Luke Winslow King & The Rag-Time Millionaires will provide the grooves on Saturday.

The free official after party takes place Sunday at 1:30 a.m. with 7inch Soul, an all vinyl dance party in the Penthouse at Maison on Frenchmen Street. Event director Amy Johnson will spin vintage R&B, soul, & funk records until the sun comes up.    
Late Sunday afternoon, dancers will meet at the French Market Flea Market Stage for a Lindy Hop Second Line Parade. Winners of the “Showdown” battle will lead the parade with Darryl “Dancin’Man504” Young and music by The Royal Street Wreckers.
To close the festivities, dancers trade in their swing shoes for sneakers for the highly anticipated “Musician vs Dancers Baseball Game” at St Roch Field on Monday at 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by Three Muses.

Weekend package tickets are sold online for a discount, or tickets can be purchased individually at the door for all events.
