If anybody deserves to be called a living legend in Norwegian free jazz it must surely be saxophone, flute and clarinet player Frode Gjerstad. Born in 1948 in Stavanger, he has since the early 80s been central on more than fifty records and played with a number of free jazz players such as Evan Parker, Johnny Dyani, John Stevens, Derek Bailey, Barry Guy, Bobby Bradford, Paul Rutherford, Hamid Drake, William Parker, Peter Brötzmann, John Edwards, Louis Moholo-Moholo, Han Bennink and several others.
Detail is the group he founded in 1981 with close friend Eivin One Pedersen (1956-2012) and legendary free jazz drummer and Spontaneous Music Ensemble founder John Stevens (1940-1994). "First Detail" is a recording from 1982 that predates the first Detail albums, hence the title. By this time Pedersen had left the group. For personal and emotional reasons Frode was sitting on the tapes until last summer before he felt ready to listen to them. Good thing he deemed them suitable for release because this is a truly great album, in our ears one of the best free jazz albums ever to come out of Norway! It´s almost unbelievable that Eivin One Pedersen had just turned 26 at the time, what an incredible player at such a young age! And John Stevens is on top form, with a very open approach in his playing and clearly enjoying the company of the Norwegians.
And Frode Gjerstad, well he is as always himself. At a time when most Norwegian sax players wanted to sound like Jan Garbarek, Gjerstad followed his own nose. In that respect there are no obvious references to other sax players. In our ears he is one of the giants still active on the international scene. Needless to say, this comes highly recommended!

Frode Gjerstad - tenor and soprano sax, bass clarinet and alto flute
Eivin One Pedersen - piano and keyboards
John Stevens - drums

RSI2168 - The Last Hurrah!!: The Weight Of The Moon (7")
PRICE: 59,00 NOK BUY

Limited to 500 copies and bound to be a collectors item.
We have dusted of the old school "double A-side" moniker simply because we can´t possibly separate these two wonderful songs by indicating one is more worthy than the other. ”The Weight Of The Moon" is a subtle blend of Americana and classic English pop and a taste of what can be expected from the very exciting new album to be released in May. "Is It Me?" is an equally irresistible ballad and both are pop music as it was meant to be; addictive.
The Last Hurrah!! is the project of HP Gundersen; guitarist, composer, arranger, producer and mentor for a vast number of musicians and singers from Bergen´s vibrant music scene for three decades. Now he has teamed up with the sublime up and coming, young LA roots singer Maesa Pullman as his new partner in crime. The core band is made up of some of Bergen´s finest and guesting on the single is drummer Larry Mullins (Iggy Pop, Swans).

MARS WILLIAMS - tenor, alto, soprano, sopranino saxophones (Chicago)
"one of the true saxophone players--someone who takes pleasure in the sheer act of blowing the horn. This tremendous enthusiasm is an essential part of his sound, and it comes through each note every time he plays. Whatever the situation, Mars plays exciting music. In many ways he has succeeded in redefining what versatility means to the modern saxophone player." - John Zorn, USA

WACLAW ZIMPEL - bass & alto clarinet, Bb clarinet, tarogato (Warsaw)
"Zimpel’s name goes straight into the list of European jazzmen that gave new life to clarinet and bass clarinet, continuing Dolphy’s example: Surman, Sclavis, Trovesi, and the like." - Francesco Martinelli, pointofdeparture, USA, 2010
"Polish composer/clarinetist Waclaw Zimpel is one of the most promising musicians from the European continent." - Eyal Hareuveni, allaboutjazz, USA, 2012

HILLIARD GREENE - double bass (NYC)
"His fabulous arco bass mixes lyricism with a burning, literally ferocious desire of opening the listener's mind." - Massimo Ricci, Touching Extremes, Italy, 2007

KLAUS KUGEL - drums (Cologne)
"Drummer Klaus Kugel is one of Central Europe's busiest and most articulate modern jazz drummers ... he treads the boundary between inside and outside playing in a particularly incisive way; always listening and never getting caught up in his own considerable chops." - Dave Wayne, AllAboutJazz, USA, 2013
"These three discs ... show Kugel as a drummer whose nearly boundless energy and imagination cannot be confined by neat categories." - Ed Hazel, Signal To Noise, USA, 2006

Klezmokum: “Klez-Evergreens Project Extended” 2015

This year Klezmokum celebrates 26 years of performances and 8 recordings!
By popular demand,  “Klez-Evergreens” project has been extended with many new pieces added for the next concert season: the first half of 2015.
Klezmokum and Klez-Edge (a quartet instrumental version of the band) have a wealth of material from many years of existence which deserve greater listening and performances for the public..

Some of these pieces were only performed a few times and have been re-arranged in a new format for this tour.  In addition there is some great music by composers that use Jewish modes (scales), also arranged for this new project including  the poignant film piece Theme from Schindler’s List by John Williams, a new composition entitled Judaic-Indian Song based on a lovely theme by jazz composer Wayne Shorter, the new Jews & Gypsies Suite II, (a follow up from the first Jews & Gypsies Suite--from our Le Dor Va Dor CD recording in 2000), modern arrangements of songs from Fiddler On the Roof , and great song standards from Harold Arlen (Hyman Arluk).  Added to the program will be modern version of the classic klezmer pieces Yikhes (Ancestors-1911) Yiddish Blues (1919),  Flatbush (Brooklyn) Waltz by klezmer composer Andy Statman, and classic klezmer dance pieces like Araber Tanz, Bolter Bulgar, and Bay a Glezele Mashke. Included will be the Klezmokum classics In the Footsteps of the Bratslav,  and Burton Greene's composition Moldavian Blues and another recent composition:  The Struggle Can Be Enobling.  Held over most likely from the first project will be Ketsad M’rakdin and the Chassidic piece Zhuritze Chlopotzi.  This promises to be a program of broad spectrum, with a wide variety of musical colors, contrasts, and rhythms inspired by many cultures with links to Judaism.
As the great Dr. Martin Luther King once stated: “It’s either one world or no world.”

Announcing the latest member of Klez-Edge and Klezmokum:
Saxophonist Alex Coke.
Alex has an extensive history in jazz and klezmer and fits right into our group with some great energy!
He has performed with the Austin Klezmorim, David Krakauer, and in Holland for years with the Willem Breuker Kollektief.

 Klez-Edge is :
Alex Coke (Austin Texas / Amsterdam)—Saxophones and Flutes
Larry Fishkind (New York / Amsterdam)—Tuba
Roberto Haliffi (Tripoli Libya /Amsterdam)—Drums
Burton Greene (Chicago / Amsterdam)—Piano, Composition and Arrangements

Music and Ethical Responsibility
by Jeff Warren

Discussions surrounding music and ethical responsibility bring to mind arguments about legal ownership and purchase. Yet the many ways in which we experience music with others are usually overlooked. Musical experience and practice always involve relationships with other people, which can place limitations on how we listen to and act upon music. In Music and Ethical Responsibility Jeff Warren challenges current approaches to music and ethics, drawing upon philosopher Emmanuel Levinas’s theory that ethics is the responsibilities that arise from our encounters with other people. Warren...
