Jazz World Quest Showcase 2022: Örjan Hultén Orion(Sweden) – Shifting Ground

orjan hulten orion - shifting ground

Örjan Hultén Orion(Sweden) – Shifting Ground (Prophone Records)

Örjan Hultén Orion‘s latest album is a collection of eight skillfully crafted tracks that showcase the musical and compositional talents of each band member. Despite the fact that the material has several “parents”, the album maintains a consistent stylistic cohesion that reflects an unifying artistic vision where melodicity embraces improvisation in such a fresh way .

Each track bears the personal touch of the musicians, making the album particularly noteworthy. The title track, composed by Filip Augustson, features an engaging interplay between Hultén’s saxophone and Torbjorn Gulz’s piano, with the melodic dialogue exploring contrasts and harmonies. “Mystique No. 12,” a ballad by drummer Peter Danemo, sees the saxophone moving gracefully over percussion and spacious piano accompaniment. Augustson’s composing skills are also on display in “Bellatrix,” which begins with a textural intro featuring drums, piano, and bass, before giving way to Hultén’s melancholic soprano theme, which is supported by the piano in the second part before transitioning to the next saxophone section.

The album’s only composition by the bandleader, “Las Tres Marias,” is a joyous, tango-inspired track that evokes Nino Rota and his work for Fellini films. “Philomelos” is a unique ballad in which Hultén’s captivating saxophone weaves a narrative through the piano melody, complemented by Augustson’s seamless bowing. Danemo’s “Even in the odds” follows in a playful vein, providing a lively backdrop for the drums, bass, piano, and saxophone to perform with exceptional passion and delicacy. “Rigel” opens with Augustson’s bass line and features the piano setting the stage for the saxophone’s melodic entrance, resulting in a virtuosic piece with entertaining blues accents.

The album concludes with “Nosebleed,” a track rich in rhythmic complexity that allows Hultén to fully show his musicianship.

“Shifting Ground” offers new discoveries with each listen and is well worth multiple plays; it is a deserving reward for the listener.

Musicians: Örjan Hultén – saxophones, Torbjorn Gulz – piano, Filip Augustson – bass, Peter Danemo– drums

SWEDEN/POLAND : Fire! Orchestra-Actions(2020)

This new, extended reading by Mats Gustafsson and Fire! Orchestra of the great Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki´s seminal "Actions For Free Jazz Orchestra" (1971) was commissioned by the Sacrum Profanum festival in Kraków in 2018.

The idea was to place this classic piece in a contemporary setting, with a new approach and a new body of sound. However, the original score was used as a platform for the new reading, connecting history with the present. The first performance of "Actions For Free Jazz Orchestra" took place in 1971 at Donaueschingen and featured the New Eternal Rhythm Orchestra, 14 international jazz heavyweights assembled by Don Cherry for the occasion and conducted by Penderecki.

The composer had heard the Globe Unity Orchestra a couple of years earlier and was fascinated by the possibilites of working with musicians from a different background and with other perspectives than he was used to from the classical world. The challenge for all involved was to find the right balance between composition and improvisation.

The idea was initially met with some scepticism from the musicians, but this soon gave way to acceptance and even great eagerness. Fire! Orchestra´s instrumentation is almost identical to that of 1971, the main difference being a tuba replacing one of the trombones.

Also worth noticing is that the new reading clocks in at 40 minutes, considerably longer than the 1971 version. Released 28.02.20

SWEDEN: Introducing World Music's Marius Billgobenson

Introducing World Music's Marius Billgobenson
New Album Out December 2019
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Stockholm Sweden - May 15, 2019 - Just two years ago Marius Billgobenson gave the world his debut, The Sum of My Pardon. An album All About Jazz's Jim Olin called "an intriguing musical journey." Now after a couple of years of promoting and playing, Marius Billgobenson is ready to deliver the much anticipated follow up, December 2019's Tribes In Mind.
Jazz Corner was not wrong when they lamented Marius Billgobenson "exudes charisma and positivity" on The Sum of My Pardon. Taking the best that jazz, blues, and African has to offer and melting it into one pot and stirring it ever so slightly until everything has come together cohesively and tastefully, Marius outdid himself on his debut alongside the likes of Jens Stenbo (drums), Markus Enghag (piano), Everart Araujo Lucio (bass), Patric Skog (guitars), Karolina Karner (vocals), Teresa Perrelli (vocals), and Kabara Kabamba (kongas). Now he plans to do it all over again with his November 2019 release, Tribes In Mind.
As the release of Tribes In Mind nears, Marius Billgobenson will be booking local performances for the late fall and early winter of 2019 into early 2020. He'll then continue to book a full-fledged tour in May 2020. Those interested in interviewing Marius Billgobenson, or reviewing his album this fall can reach out via the information provided below.

NORWAY/UK/SWEDEN: HAFTOR MEDBØE / JACOB KARLZON (2019)

HAFTOR MEDBØE / JACOB KARLZON – ALBUM RELEASE IN APRIL 2019

Norwegian/Scottish guitarist Haftor Medbøe and Swedish pianist Jacob Karlzon join creative forces in the recording of a set of original compositions. The album is released on limited edition, hand-numbered 10” vinyl on 05/APRIL/19 and available for purchase with bundled digital download including a bonus track exclusively from http://copperfly.co.uk

Since first meeting at the Islay Jazz Festival in the Scottish Hebrides 15 years ago, Haftor and Jacob have been slowly hatching a plan to collaborate. At long last they come together on this recording, first premiered live as part of Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival 2018, that draws on their shared roots and personal influences.

The work evokes a Nordic sensibility with echoes of the Scandinavian jazz tradition as embodied by pianists Jan Johansson, Esbjorn Svensson and Tord Gustavsen. Inspired in part by traces of the region’s folk musics, the album simultaneously meditates on more universal aspects of the here and the now. The project will be toured in the UK and Scandinavia during 2019/20.

 BIOGRAPHIES:

Haftor Medbøe has released albums with his eponymous group on Linn Records, and Fabrikant Records, and with Norwegian compatriots Espen Eriksen (pn.) and Gunnar Halle (tpt.) on Losen records. Born in Norway, Haftor has for many years been resident in Scotland where he is Jazz Musician in Residence and Associate Professor of Music at the capital city’s Edinburgh Napier University

Jacob Karlzon is an award winning Swedish pianist who is celebrated for his work with artists including Silje Nergaard, Nils Landgren, and Viktoria Tolstoy. He has shared the stage with a host of jazz luminaries including Billy Cobham, Kenny Wheeler and Norma Winstone, and has recorded for Caprice Records, Stunt Records, ACT and Warner Music. In 2012 Jacob gained the coveted status of Steinway Artist.

NORWAY/SWEDEN: RYMDEN-Reflections and Odysseys(2019)

While Bugge Wesseltoft is a musician with a keen appreciation of music wherever it comes from, and the unity among people that music can bring, he also appreciates music as an expression of an identity. His championing of the cause of "European Jazz as its own art form" sees him return to the piano trio format with the Swedish rhythm section consisting of Magnus Öström and Dan Berglund. The groups New Conception of Jazz and e.s.t. (esbjorn svensson trio) moved in different orbits around the same musical planet, and produced some of the best recorded music and performances that spanned the 90s into the new millennium.

The influence of both groups was profound and can still be seen and heard today in the emerging young talents from Scandinavia and beyond, many of whom have found encouragement and a home on Wesseltoft's Jazzland Recordings label. e.s.t. remain regarded as one of the best live acts of the era, and they hold their position as the most successful artist on the Munich-based ACT record label. Both groups were explorers, experimenters testing the limits of existing forms or trying to discover new ones.

That a crossover between these two powerhouses of 21st century European jazz should occur is not surprising, although perhaps long overdue. With the formation of RYMDEN (meaning "space" – as in "outer space" or "universe"), we are presented with a music that is innately Scandinavian in mood and attitude. This is not the "Scandinavian sound" one might picture: this is not music for meditating over a view of frozen mountains or tranquil fjords (although the listener is free to do so!): This is music that reflects all aspects of the Scandinavian milieu of the 21st century. This is music filled with rugged dynamism, extended playing techniques, brooding or melancholic atmospheres. It offers cinematic and epic sounds, cascading drama, crashing and splashing, tension and release. It delivers melodic, high-octane unison riffs,

Minimalism immersed in rich improvised tapestries, vocal doubling of melodies, and moments of growling menace. It does this with minimal electronic trickery, with Wesseltoft moving between piano and Rhodes, and Berglund and Öström coaxing just about every possible sound from their instruments.

After 3 years, 120 international concerts and with 2 critically acclaimed albums in their luggage, FREEDOMS TRIO is preparing for new tours in 2019.

Under the direction of acoustic guitarist Steinar Aadnekvam, originally from Bergen - Norway, together with bassist Rubem Farias, from Salvador da Bahia - Brasil, and drummer / singer Deodato Siquir, from Maputo - Mozambique, FREEDOMS TRIO creates an expression that is completely unique. Their music is in an Afro Jazz Rock idiom, firmly footed in the present and with close, warm audience contact in lively concert experiences with appeal to a broad range of listeners.

FREEDOMS TRIO is currently planning concerts for the summer and fall of 2019, and upon request for other periods. The band is also available for workshops. The band is based in Stockholm, Sweden.

Don't miss this exciting and inspiring music group.
>>> Contact steinarguitar@gmail.com for dialogue and booking.

With best regards,
Steinar Aadnekvam - www.freedomstrio.com

"Mr. Aadnekvam dominates the rarefied space afforded to top-flight virtuoso guitarists.
This music is, however, also informed by thunderous rumble of bass and drums, all of which makes it a uniquely expressive group.” - World Music Report (Canada)

"Familiar in its aesthetic-groove-minded world-jazz but rare in the quality of the musicianship."
- Jazztimes (USA)

"Young genius, bursting with creativity." - Jazz Podium Magazine (Germany)

"Their music is both complex and joyful, full of passion and energy. Not only do you hear amazing guitar playing from Steinar Aadnekvam, but equal musicianship from drummer Deodato Siquir and bassist Rubem Farias - plus they have a natural synergy which can be rare, especially when the musicians are so accomplished individually. People should hear Freedoms Trio. Gives you hope."
- Robben Ford (American guitar legend)

SWEDEN: Oskar Lindström Trio-Fugue (Nilento Records 2018)

Oskar Lindström is one of Sweden´s most captivating young pianists and composers. Being nominated by Swedish national radio as "newcomer of the year" in 2017 he now releases his debut album as a leader. "Fugue" exclusively features Lindström´s distinctly lyrical original compositions, drawing inspiration from the strong tradition of Nordic pianotrios as well as folk music and chorales. Alongside Lindström´s personal and precise touch on the piano, fellow Swedish musicians Eirik Lund and Filip Olofsson, having backgrounds in various styles of music apart from jazz, offer an intriguing addition to the musical discourse. The album is recorded at the renowned Nilento studio outside Gothenburg in the early spring of 2018.

SWEDEN: Lalle Larsson Trio- Ashen Lights (Reingold Records 2018)

Ashen Lights

Lalle Larsson Trio- Ashen Lights Ashen Lights is the new trio release from Swedish keyboard player Lalle Larsson. After the critically acclaimed projects Seven Deadly Pieces, Until Never and The Weaveworld Trilogy - Lalle is back with another strong release on Reingold Records. This time as the soloist in a more intimate trio setting. Taking influences from all kinds of different music, most notably John Coltrane, Allan Holdsworth and Eric Dolphy who he mentions as his biggest inspiration, Larsson is home to many musical worlds. On this album he is focusing on creating moods and soundscapes, expressing himself through improvisation, often over long forms of moving chords and textures. To me music is all about expression. Harmonically I would say that I am more influenced by contemporary classical music than from, let´s say, bebop, but the compositions are definitely sketches made for improvisation and that makes it some sort of jazz I suppose, I've been composing and practising for this album every since I started to play 35 years ago On this recording Larsson teams up with renowned bassist Jonas Reingold (Steve Hackett, The Flower Kings, The Sea Within) and drummer Walle Wahlgren (Cam, Agents of Mercy) who both add a great organic feel and an elegant touch to the music. On 'Ashen Lights' Lalle unfolds his own blend of jazz, contemporary classical music, and 70´s fusion. Fans of Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul and Allan Holdsworth should not miss out on this hot electric jazz release!

SWEDEN: Epidot - LOVE IN BREMEN (iMOGENA 2018)

Epidot is a trio that plays music written by guitarist Erik Ivarsson, which we can hear with, for example, Actual Arvid Nero and Mona Wallin, Black Cat Bone, Elina Ryd and Parallel Activity.
Epidot's music can be seen as a melting pot of different styles and expressions. The early progressive rock with the style typical complex song structures and great dynamic variations, the late 60's powertrios such as The Jimi Hendrix Experience, the early 60's guitar band like The Shadows, the jazz music with its focus on turn and improvisation, the blues's raw and unpolished sound.
On double bass we hear Adam Lindblom, one of the most popular bassists on the Göteborsk music scene.
Adam has heard with his stable and strong melodic games with, for example, Ove Ingemarsson, Eric Liftig and Tobias Grim.
On drums we find Johan Horner.
He also plays with Anders Boson and Gentlemen & Gangsters.
Johan puts a strong mark on Trion's music with his engering and playful drumming.
