JazzWorldQuest Showcase 2020: The KUHtrio(Austria /Czech Republic)- Old Souls

The KUHtrio(Austria /Czech Republic)- O Samba Boemio / Old Souls

Composer: Edi Koehldorfer
Label: ATS REcords
Website
In autumn 2018 Edi Köhldorfer (guit), František Uhlíř (b) and Jaromír Helešic (dr) were engaged together for a jazz festival in Styria / A.
During the rehearsals for this evening it was already clear that not only was the musically extraordinary happening here, but that the “vibes” were also right. After a brilliant concert that was frenetically celebrated by the audience, it was decided not to stop at a “one-nighter”.In autumn 2019 the new band presented itself to an enthusiastic audience as part of a 2-week tour through Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria. After the tour, the trio went well into the studio and was able to release their first CD “Old Souls” in summer 2020 and present it live on a tour in D / CZ / A in the autumn afterwards. The music of “the KUH trio” is characterized on the one hand by the compositions of Köhldorfer and Uhlíř and on the other hand by the special sound, which is characterized by Köhldorfer’s versatile playing on electric and acoustic guitars. The legendary swing by Uhlíř / Helešic is complemented by excursions into Latin and funk grooves and there is even room for African….the KUHtrio Live on YouTube

JazzWorldQuest Showcase 2020: Frantisek Uhlir(Czech Republic)-Album: Story of My Life

Frantisek Uhlir(Czech Republic)-PART 3 – ÚSTÍ – BRNO – PRAHA
 / Prolog Born to Future

Album: Story of My Life
The year 2020 is a significant date for me – I celebrate my 70th birthday and by coincidence, my father František, a bandleader, composer and pedagogue, would live to be 100 this year. This is why I have invented a little unusual present to this anniversary for me but primarily for the pleasure of the listener and fans of not only jazz music.
I wrote a suite called Story of My Life where a crucial role plays the number seven from my seventies. In addition to the Prologue, it is further constituted of seven musical parts which describe my life and my musical path and are tailor-made for seven excellent jazz players. All single musical movements are supplemented by photos illustrating my life.
Musicians: FRANTIŠEK UHLÍŘ – bass FRANTIŠEK TOMŠÍČEK- trumpet, flugelhorn PŘEMEK TOMŠÍČEK – trombone ANDY SCHOFIELD – altsax SUZANNE HIGGINS – tenorsax STANDA MÁCHA – piano MAREK URBÁNEK – drums

CANADA/UK/Czech Republic: Antoine Fafard'-Chemical Reactions - Pre-order your copy

Chemical Reactions
The new joint album project with Gavin Harrison on drums

I'm glad to announce the upcoming release of a joint album project I produced in equal partnership with Gavin Harrison. The title of the album is Chemical Reactions and consists in probably the most ambitious project I've been involved in to this day.

It all began with the concept of composing music to full symphonic orchestra... and from that simple idea, things eventually materialized into something real. In Chemical Reactions, you'll find music performed by the Janacek Philharmonic orchestra recorded in its home town of Ostrava, in the Czech Republic. The album also offers music performed by a string quartet, and to top of it all, old-time collaborator Jerry Goodman is also featured on one piece.

I hope you'll check out this new venture. Gavin and I will be posting videos related to this project into the weeks to come and I hope you'll enjoy what we came up with. Many thanks for your support!

Antoine

CZECH REPUBLIC: JAROSLAV ŠIMÍČEK QUARTET-Quintet (2017)

THE GHOST OF JAZZ

As a sax player in communist Czechoslovakia, I landed the weirdest job. It was a small role in a fantasy documentary about the famous prewar Czech jazz composer and theatrical alchemist, E. F. Burian. Wearing heavy minstrel makeup, I was to impersonate a nameless black jazz saxophonist who, legend has it, lived and played in Prague during the 20ies. Nobody really knew who this guy was or even whether he actually existed. He was more like a ghost of the past, an outlandish and picturesque apparition in a somewhat sheltered, petty bourgeoise Mitteleuropean milieu. And yet, that's exactly what jazz was to a lot of Czechs for decades: a dreamy, yet provocative mirage from a land far away. Later, under the oppressive regime, it also became a wistful and hopeful echo of freedom.

It might seem as if jazz and original Czech folk music are worlds apart. Compare Czech peasant earthiness with the tension of Afro-American rhythms and the primal howl of the blues; the provincial priggishness of a Czech small town to the cool, slick worldliness of a jazz metropolis. But exactly here was the attraction for certain restless denizens of the sedentary Mitteleuropean milieu. Jazz was always a completely different planet. If you dig deeper, though, there are also surprising... more

Argentinean composer/arranger Carlos Franzetti is well known for his devotion in bridging the gaps between jazz, classical and Argentinean folkloric music, especially tango. ITALY/CZECH REPUBLIC: The MUH Trio: Prague After Dark (JMood Records 2017)

JMood Records is pleased to announce the release of “Prague After Dark”. This is the latest jazz project from Roberto Magris and his European jazz trio.

In fact, this trio is not so new at all! Roberto Magris, Frantisek Uhlir and Jaromir Helesic have been friends for over 25 years and performed in Prague and around Europe a number of times together since the 1980’s. Only recently have they decided to come back together and continue to create more music together.
The project is superb! Only a few standards are sprinkled in this project, the rest are original compositions by Magris and Uhlir.
Prague is a vibrant jazz town. Both Frantisek and Jaromir are well known in Prague and throughout Europe for being of the best.
It is only 4,920 miles and just a little over 10 hours from Kansas City, Missouri to Prague, Czech Republic but this unit performs accessible jazz. “I was very excited to have Roberto performing with a great jazz unit in Europe”, says Paul Collins, jazz impresario from Kansas City. The music is fresh and captivating. With every listen I am totally absorbed in the music and only come to my senses when it is finished playing. There are more performances scheduled and other recording plans for this great European jazz unit. Keep your eyes and ears fixed on this great musical team”! The CD liner notes are written by Edward Blanco, Producer and Host of WDNA jazz radio and staff writer with AllAboutJazz.com

“Flow” - the third album in a trilogy of themes, following the themes of “Time” (from the album “About Time”) and “Change” (from “A Handful of Changes” ).

In Flow, pianist-composer Ari Erev and his players pour fresh energies into the pool of sounds that nourish our world. They do so in accord with the hallmarks oIf personal expression, collaborative interplay and creative sophistication that characterizes jazz in all its glorious styles and forms. —Howard Mandel noted author, journalist and president of the Jazz Journalists Association

In this album, Erev continues his exploration of combining percussive Latin rhythms with the rich harmonies of post-bop Jazz, while still maintaining his gentle and expressive touch on the piano. The result is a personal and artistically-performed album based on Erev’s original tunes, and complemented by tunes by American pianist Fred Hersch, Brazilian pianist Debora Gurgel, and a tune by the distinguished Israeli composer Yohanan Zarai.

Erev dedicates “July, Again”, one of his original tunes, to the memory of bassist Udi Kazmirski, a close friend and member of his trio who passed away in 2012.

Some of the best Israeli Jazz musicians join Erev in this Trio/Quintet project: Bassist Eli Magen is one of the most appreciated musicians in Israel, with a long history of playing (and singing) with all the who’s and who’s in the Israeli Pop/Rock and Jazz domains, as well as a former double-bassist for the Israeli Philhar- monic orchestra. Magen brings to the project superb musicianship and his wonderful sound and melodic bass line, while drummer Ron Almog provides a solid pulse complemented with varied tensions.

Joining the trio on ve of the tunes are: Yuval Cohen (“3 Cohens”) on Soprano sax. who contributes his great musicianship and rich melodic lines, and Gilad Dobrecky on percussion, who adds a Latin touch, full of colors and imagination, to the mix.

MARTIN BRUNNER TRIO - Still Warm To Touch(ARTA Records 2012)

Martin Brunner: piano
Rastislav Uhrík: bass
Tomáš Hobzek: drums

Martin Brunner is a jazz pianist and composer, and comes from Hradec Králové, the Czech Republic. His interest in music started in his early childhood. He studied classical piano at the Conservatory in Pardubice and then composition at the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory in the class led by jazz pianist and composer Karel Růžička. He also attended lessons of arranging led by pianist and bandleader Milan Svoboda and jazz interpretation by pianist Matej Benko.
His primary musical activity (both as a pianist and a composer) presents his own band Martin Brunner Trio. The trio has already performed at many concerts and festivals and its debut CD “Behind the Clouds” was very successful on the Japanese music market. The song "Behind The Clouds" was awarded as "The Best Jazz Composition Of The Year" in Bohemia Jazz Fest and OSA competition and was performed at the main Bohemia Jazz Fest concert in 2010. The band regularly performs at well-known jazz clubs in Prague. Martin Brunner also composes music of other styles and genres (e.g. for big band or string quartet) and teaches obligatory jazz piano at the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory.

Martin Brunner Trio is a band of a standard jazz trio format and it focuses exclusively on playing the original compositions. The trio was founded in autumn 2007 in Prague and the original line-up consisted of Martin Brunner – Martin Kapusník – Petr Mikeš. From 2007 to 2010, it performed at many concerts and festivals in the Czech Republic. In June 2009, the CD “Behind the Clouds” (containing nine original compositions) was released under the Czech label “Arta Records” and the trio toured the Czech Republic to promote the album. The composition “Behind the Clouds” was awarded “Best Jazz Composition of the Year” (by the “Bohemia Jazz Fest” and OSA association) and this piece was also released as a part of the retrospective CD of Arta Records (CD “Everybody Goes To Agharta”). The album was also very successful on the Japanese market.
In 2010, the original line-up of the band changed: Tomáš Hobzek became a new drummer and, later, new double bass player Rastislav Uhrík joined the band. The Trio went on another tour in the Czech Republic in 2011, performed at the festival “Jazz At The Prague Castle” (this concert was recorded and will be released in the future under label “Multisonic”) and in July 2011 recorded a new studio album, which is in preparation for its release. The band can be heard regularly at Prague’s well-known jazz clubs.
