« When Ghosts Were Young » est le nouveau disque en leader d’Olivier Bogé. Il fait suite aux magnifiques « The World Begins Today » (2013) enregistré à New York en compagnie de musiciens internationaux parmi les plus importants du jazz contemporain — Tigran Hamasyan, Jeff Ballard et Sam Minaie — et à « Expanded Places » (2015), dans lequel Olivier avait enregistré une grande partie des instruments présents (saxophone, piano, guitare, Fender Rhodes et voix). Ces deux opus ont reçu un écho très important dans la presse (ffff Télérama pour les deux, classé parmi les « 20 meilleurs disques de l’année » par les Inrocks catégorie « Chanson, jazz, musiques du monde », Coup de cœur Libération, France Musique, etc.).

Ce qui étonne, disque après disque, chez cet artiste, c’est en premier lieu sa capacité de renouvellement permanent, son envie d’explorer des univers très différents, usant de ses capacités de multi instrumentiste pour mieux sonder ses univers intérieurs. Avec toujours comme fil conducteur un amour sans limite pour la mélodie, pour les couleurs harmoniques sans bornes et un lyrisme profond qui lui est propre. Des mélodies qui s’immiscent en chacun, petit à petit, pour ne plus quitter l’auditeur. Cette apparente simplicité cache une recherche poussée et une complexité jamais mise en avant.

USA: Melvin Sparks- I'm Funky Now(2018)

 

A previously unreleased album by funky jazz hero Melvin Sparks. This would have been his third album for the Westbound group of labels, but after being mastered, and a limited number of acetates produced, it was pulled from the release schedules and apart from one track on a compilation (1999's 'Alright! Black American Dance Music From The Disco Era') was never heard. Recorded in 1976 with the finest Detroit session musicians, it pays lip service to the then-current success of disco, but doesn't pander. Instead what you get is a heavily funky, orchestrated version of his usual style, with some fine grooves and some beautiful mellow moments.

USA: Jason Keiser & Jason Day-Conversations with Jason(2017)

The duet's of Jason Keiser on guitar and Jason Day on piano in the new album, Conversations with Jason feature a wide variety of jazz duets including a rearranged composition by professional guitarist in bluegrass and the acoustic jazz scene, Tony Rice.
"Jason is a breath of fresh air in the local jazz landscape, bringing an Americana roots oriented approach to the standard repertoire "-Gus Kambeitz- Professional Bay Area Bassist & Music Educator. Jason Keiser is currently finishing his Undergraduate Degree in Bluegrass & Jazz Music Studies, and has currently been accepted into San José State Universities Masters Program in Jazz Studies, to begin his Master's Degree in the Fall of 2018. He is the recent recipient of The Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival Music Scholarship in 2016 for his guitar playing in Bluegrass from The Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival in Oak Hill, New York. As well, he is a recipient of East Tennessee State Universities Public Performance Scholarship & Roy M. Huskey Memorial Scholarship Endowment in 2017.

NEWPORT BEACH, CALIF.  This year’s party, featuring a big band closing each of the 4 nights, will take place February 15-18, 2018, and will again be the time for mainstream jazz lovers from around the country (& world) to arrive in Newport Beach for Jazz at the beautiful Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa.  In addition to a Saturday and Sunday Champagne Jazz Brunch, daily evening concerts will take place in the Marriott’s Grand Pacific Ballroom plus afternoon pool sessions on the grounds of the resort. Title sponsor for the Newport Beach Jazz Party & Big Band Blowout is The Jazz Cruise and Blue Note at Sea Cruise, the world’s only full ship charters dedicated to “Straight-Ahead and Contemporary Jazz”.  Media sponsor will be the nation’s #1 jazz station- KJAZZ.

*Thursday’s Grand Opening Night, starting at 7:30pm, will feature 3 concerts, beginning with a Weekend Preview Show hosted by Ken Peplowski with James Morrison, Tom Ranier, Chuck Berghofer, Matt Witek plus guests Dena DeRose, Scott Hamilton, Bria Skonberg & Houston Person.  The second concert will feature THE FOUR FRESHMEN plus One Great Trombonist!  Closing this Grand Opening night will be Chuck Redd Plays The Music of the TERRY GIBBS DREAM BAND, featuring Joe LaBarbera and  Ken Peplowski.

*Friday evening will feature 4 concerts starting at 7:00pm (as well as Saturday & Sunday evenings) with the first concert featuring the Emmet Cohen Trio with Ken Peplowski, followed by Scott Hamilton and Harry Allen in Heavy Juice featuring Tamir Hendelman, Chuck Berghofer, Butch Miles.  The third concert will bring to our stage for the first time trumpeter & vocalist Bria Skonberg with her set including all-stars Larry Fuller, John Clayton, Chuck Redd plus special guest- James Morrison. Closing the evening will again be a big band in a tribute to the late Frankie Capp with his FRANK CAPP JUGGERNAUT directed by drummer Butch Miles.

*Saturday-the third of four swingin’ nights, will open with Harry Allen’s Four Others in a tribute to Woody Herman with Harry Allen, Ken Peplowski, Rickey Woodard, Adam Schroeder, Ehud Asherie, John Clayton, Joe LaBarbera. Concert #2 will bring to the stage pianist/vocalist Dena DeRose together with Houston Person who will lead the group including Katie Thiroux and Special guest- Bria Skonberg.  Next will be the iconic songs of Alan & Marilyn Bergman as performed by Alan Bergman, along with pianist Bill Cantos.  Completing this stellar evening will be the PATRICK WILLIAMS BIG BAND conducted by Patrick Williams and featuring Peter Erskine plus some very special guest artists.

*Sunday will bring together a glorious close to “A Weekend For the Love of Jazz and Big Bands”, with the Ken Peplowski Quartetfeaturing Tom Ranier, Chuck Berghofer & Joe LaBarbera followed by the Larry Fuller Trio.  The next set will feature James Morrison and his sons,- Harry on bass and William on guitar plus Tom Ranier and Butch Miles.  Adding variety to this final night of the Newport Beach Jazz Party & Big Band Blowout will be funnyman Pete Barbutti- Johnny Carson’s favorite comic.  Closing out this world class weekend of mainstream jazz will be the NEWPORT BEACH JAZZ PARTY ALL-STAR BIG BAND directed by John Clayton and featuring Lewis Nash on drums plus various special guest artists!
