Willie Nelson to play 2013 Ottawa Jazz Festival

OTTAWA — Country music icon Willie Nelson leads the list of acts playing the Ottawa Jazz Festival this summer. Nelson, who is 79 but will be 80 when he plays Confederation Park, last performed in Ottawa in April 2009 at the Ottawa Civic Centre.

The Duval County Tourist Development Council on Thursday approved $400,000 for Visit Jacksonville's marketing budget and $20,000 for the 2013 Jacksonville Jazz Festival, but combined, the amounts were almost $130,000 less than what was requested.

The festival gives high school and award-winning collegiate jazz ensembles the opportunity to perform in front of some of the greatest names in professional jazz, who offer their critique as well as awards. The Elmhurst College Jazz Festival kicked off on Thursday afternoon with the high school invitational performances and continues through Sunday, Feb. 24, at  Hammerschmidt Chapel.

The 36th annual Atlanta Jazz Festival will this year focus its spotlight on “Generation Next.” The lineup for the free fest, which takes places Memorial Day Weekend (May 25-27) in Piedmont Park, includes Cécile McLorin Salvant, Dominick Farinacci, Meshell Ndegeocello, José James, Tia Fuller, Aruán Ortiz, Gretchen Parlato, and Rudresh Mahanthappa. The park will open from 10 a.m.-11 p.m. daily during the event, which will also include a KidZone area, shopping and food vendors.

DeMiero Jazz Fest returns to Edmonds

The sounds of jazz will emanate from the Edmonds Center for the Arts when the 38th annual DeMiero Jazz Fest kicks off Thursday.Singer Dee Daniels is the artistic director for the festival for a second year, hosting the festival's three evening concerts and bringing her gospel and blues-infused jazz style to the stage as the featured artist Thursday night.
