USA: South Carolina Jazz Festival, Oct. 14-16
It’s the one guaranteed weekend of the year that Cheraw won’t look — or sound — like a sleepy little southern town, even to city folks. It’s the annual South Carolina Jazz Festival, Oct. 14-16, honoring Cheraw’s native son and international jazz ambassador Dizzy Gillespie.
Live jazz music will literally fill the streets, the air and nearly every restaurant in town. Performances will begin in the schools on Friday afternoon and continue through the weekend all over town.
Headline entertainers this year include Charlton Singleton Quintet, Kat Williams Trio and Noel Freidline. Tickets for these shows at the Theatre on the Green are available online or at the Cheraw Recreation Department. Tickets are $20 for a single night or $35 for both Friday and Saturday evening performances. The website is www.scjazzfestival.com
The streets themselves will come to life with sidewalk art competitions in chalk. This competition is based on the Italian art form known as “Madonnari” or street painting. Teams of at least four people will create their masterpieces on the sidewalk by the Theatre on the Green Saturday, Oct. 15.
Free workshops will be held prior to festival weekend by artist Robin Bersinger providing instructions in grid technique and tips on sidewalk chalk. Registration for the sidewalk art competition is $20 per team and prizes will be awarded to the winning teams.
Contact Lindsey Bennett, executive director for the Cheraw Arts Commission, for more information on the sidewalk art competition at (843) 537-8420.
Weekend events also will include a Bebop parade, a 5-k walk/run , and a golf tournament offering a chance to win a new car.
Proceeds from the third annual Dizzy Gillespie Scholarship Golf Tournament will be donated to the Dizzy Gillespie Scholarship Fund. The tournament is open to the public and all golfers are invited. Registration to participate, which includes a meal, is $60 per player.
Registration deadline for the golf tournament is Monday, Oct. 10. For additional information call Clarence W. Long at (478) 737-3031 or visit cwldevon@cox.net on the web.
