Portuguese vocalist and guitarist Carmen Souza breaks explores “the connections between Latin, African and Arabic music, American jazz and the music of Cape Verde.” (All About Jazz) World soul music for the 21st century.
9:30 PM PST - John Santos Sextet with special guest Rico Pabón: Filosofia Caribeña
Master percussionist John Santos, one of the foremost Afro-Latin musicians in the world, brings together styles, rhythms, concepts and artists from different generations described by All About Jazz “...as rich and vibrant as the culture which it represents.” Rico Pabón, Afro-Latin Hip Hop MC,will be a special guest!
11:00 PM PST - Juan-Carlos Formell: Johnny’s Dream Club
Inspired by the "Feeling" movement of 1940s Cuba, guitarist and vocalist Juan-Carlos Formell debuts his latest project, “bring[ing] the rumba and bolero forms up to contemporary speed without tarnishing their essence." (Village Voice)

SATURDAY NIGHT, 9.17

9:00 PM PST - Scott Colley Trio with Chris Potter & Antonio Sanchez
Bassist Scott Colley, along with saxophonist Chris Potter and drummer Antonio Sanchez grace the stages of Monterey once again! DownBeat wrote that “Chris Potter is one of the most creative and consistent reed players in jazz… Colley possesses not only fluency and a huge, commanding sound…” and the New York Times said Antonio Sanchez is “one of the standout jazz drummers on the contemporary scene, a polyrhythmic ace attuned to the subtlest dynamic fluctuations.”
10:30 PM PST - Donny McCaslin Group
Donny McCaslin has “become one of jazz's elite improvisers, a player sought out by musicians such as orchestra leader and composer Maria Schneider, trumpeter Dave Douglas, drummer Antonio Sanchez and pianist Danilo Perez” according to the San Jose Mercury News. At Monterey, his plugged in ensemble features keyboardist Uri Caine, electric bassist Fima Ephron and drummer Mark Guiliana.

SUNDAY NIGHT, 9.18

7:00 PM PST - Benny Green Trio with special guest Donald Harrison: Monk’s Dream: Fifty Years Fresh
Pianist Benny Green, along with Donald Harrison on alto saxophone, Ben Wolfe on bass and Kenny Washington on drums tackle the music of Thelonious Monk in this special show. The New York Times said that Benny “plays funky and hard, and breathes not only be-bop but Oscar Peterson’s virtuosic effusions as well” and Jazz Times wrote “Donald Harrison is one of the most confident and convincing improvisers in jazz today.”
9:00 PM PST - Robert Glasper Experiment with Bilal
In Robert Glasper’s third and final appearance at the Festival, he’ll perform with his genre-splitting Experiment featuring Casey Benjamin on saxophone, Derrick Hodge on bass, Chris Dave on drums, and Bilal on vocals. The Los Angeles Times wrote: “It's a short list of jazz pianists who have the wherewithal to drop a J Dilla reference into a Thelonious Monk cover, but not many jazz pianists are Robert Glasper. He's equally comfortable in the worlds of hip-hop and jazz…”
