Each Labor Day weekend, a friendly rivalry takes place between the Chicago and Detroit jazz festivals — this despite the fact the country’s two largest free jazz festivals sometimes share performers that move from one to the other in either direction on consecutive days. In 2007, Detroit’s official slogan, as its merchandise reflected, was “Rumble in the Great Lakes,” where it looked jointly at the legacies of both the Windy City and the Motor City.
At 33 years old, Chicago’s effort, which runs Sept. 1 through 4, predates Detroit’s effort — taking place Sept. 2 through 5 — by one year. But who is really counting?
