Cellist Jacob Szekely Releases New Jazz CD To Critical Acclaim, Credits Los Angeles Violinmaker Benning

Innovative indie Jazz cellist Jacob Szekely has released a critically acclaimed self-titled recording of improvisations with the Jacob Szekely Trio.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / PRURGENT

Innovative indie Jazz cellist Jacob Szekely has released a critically acclaimed self-titled recording of improvisations with the Jacob Szekely Trio, performed on a cello crafted by Los Angeles violinmaker Eric Benning of Benning Violins. Szekely says of the master-crafted instrument, “It inspires me.”

Los Angeles, CA October 15, 2013 - Describing distinguished cellist Jacob Szekely’s newest recording with words like “cerebral” and “soulful”, critics have praised the indie musician’s innovation and creativity. According to Szekely, largely credited for transforming the cello into a credible lead jazz instrument, the “soulfulness” on the recording wouldn’t have been possible without his cello made by Eric Benning, a Los Angeles-area luthier who also crafts violas and violins.

“It was perfect timing for both of us,” stated Benning. “I had just made a Stradivarius model cello with some absolutely gorgeous wood I had been saving. Just as I was completing it, Jacob was looking to purchase something high-end. His career was starting to take off.”

The CD, titled “The Jacob Szekely Trio”, which includes the talents of pianist Josh Nelson and drummer Christopher Allis, has received decidedly rave reviews from acclaimed music critics such as Brian Arsenault of the International Review of Music, who effusively stated:

The cello in Szekely’s special hands is transformative, literally. At times a guitar, a bass guitar, a violin, a harp. But always, always a cello. Is there anyone else in the world who plays the instrument like this?

Szekely states that the recording and reception would not have been possible without Benning’s cello in his hands. “It just wouldn’t have been possible without Eric’s instrument. My Benning cello is an inspiration to me. Whether I'm recording or performing, this soulful instrument empowers me to play from my heart and express what I always hope to express.”

The CD, which is available on ITunes, was noted by Strad Magazine’s reviewer James Crel as “an intriguing disc of cello-led fusion” that “resonates and charms.”

“I’m very pleased for Jacob,” states Benning. “He’s always been a ‘think outside the box’ cellist. To see him carving a successful career playing the music he really loves makes me feel a lot of joy for him. The cello’s sound has only gotten more powerful, richer and clear. Because he plays so much and so well, the sound has matured quickly and beautifully.”

The Jacob Szekely Trio CD is available on ITunes to preview and purchase:

Businesses can showcase their brands to the international music community for just 75 dollars.

Made In New York Jazz Competition offers sponsorship opportunities to promote brands and help preserve jazz legacy. Businesses can showcase their brands to the international music community for just 75 dollars.

Businesses have the opportunity to support young musicians and spread their brand to international jazz fans through the Internet in the upcoming contest.

The contest, which features young musicians from 43 countries, gets more than 1.5 million video loads and more than 20 thousand registered users, increasing daily. Second annual Made in New York Jazz Competition seeking new Talents. Companies from all over the world are invited to take part as sponsors to give budding musicians a chance to realize their dreams and get a great chance to get global visibility to the brand. In May 2014 the contest was capped off with a concert at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center with participants that came from nine countries to perform in New York City.

For as little as $75, brands may become sponsors for the Made in New York Jazz Competition. That $75 provides one developing jazz musician entrance to the contest, to show the jazz world what they have to offer. Sponsorships for the Made in New York jazz competition go beyond associating a business’s brand with a competition. A company that sponsors this contest supports music and the arts and affords opportunities to musicians throughout the world; musicians who otherwise may not have an access to a showcase for their talents like this competition.

For the official contest website, sponsorship options include logos or banners appearing on the page of the participants being supported. Sponsors can choose from different options how to support the contest and its participants. Indeed, sponsors may contribute more than $75 to support multiple entrants, and they have their choice of applying their sponsorship either individually or by country or region.

Businesses receive valuable advertising through sponsoring the Made in New York Jazz Competition, but contest founder Mikhael Brovkin said there is so much more than sponsorship; by getting involved with the Made in New York Jazz Competition, except the advertisement value that sponsor will get, they also help young musicians be heard by a global audience as well as help develop and preserve the art of jazz.

Contest sponsors are able to reach large audiences of international jazz fans online. The contest tallied over 1.5 million video loads. Contest viewers navigate to the site to watch videos of the performances submitted by participants from across the globe. What’s more, there’s a gala concert at the end of the contest, and there are sponsorship options for businesses who’d like their brand displayed in the concert hall. On May 2014, the Jazz Gala in New York concert sold full house, about 1,000 jazz fans in attendance.

Winner of the competition, vocalist Anita Vitale, came to perform from Italy. Her winning submission in 2013 was an acappella performance of “Centerpiece” by John Hendricks. Performing alongside her in the video was Bobby McFerrin. Runner up was Russian-born pianist Evgeny Lebedev, who was recognized for an original composition he submitted with his three-piece group called Evgeny Lebedev World Trio.

Both Vitale and Lebedev were on hand on May 3, 2014 for the Jazz Gala in New York, the festival celebrating the winners of the 2013 Made in New York Jazz Competition. The concert took place in front of a full house Tribeca Performing Arts Center in Manhattan. The concert brought many of the contest participants together and gave the young musicians an opportunity to rehearse with seasoned jazz masters for a couple days before sharing the stage with them at the actual performance. For many of the performers, this incredible stage experience was part of a first trip to New York City and for some to United States.

Legendary jazz musicians that performers had the privilege to rub elbows and share the stage with at the Jazz Gala in New York included Lenny White and Randy Brecker. They also sat on the panel of judges for the competition leading up to the gala event.

Piano-making company KAWAI partnered with the 2013 Made in New York Jazz Competition and provided prizes; an ES7 Digital Piano to the first runner up, and an MP6 Professional Stage Piano to second runner up. This year Kawai USA extended the partnership with Made In New York Jazz Competition.

About the Made in New York Jazz Competition

In its first year, the Made in New York Jazz brought musicians throughout the world together through the unique online competition. Entrants in six categories were judged by voters who registered through the contest’s website, as well as a committee of world-renowned jazz musicians and panel of legendary judges! The judges are: Lenny White, Joe Lovano and Randy Brecker.

Last year, the Made in New York Jazz Competition received hundreds of submissions representing 37 countries. Over 16,000 people registered to the website.

Dear Friends in Music
What does a band that has performed over 1000 shows during the course of the last four years do for an encore? – Recording a scorching, balls-to-the-wall, three-alarm live album seems like a natural progression! Without question, one of the hardest-working, most motivated and -driven independent bands in the world today, Marbin's The Third Set is a testimony to the work ethic, drive and determination which has become synonymous with their name, and the depth of musical diction, styles and textures these gentlemen have reached. Beyond that, it's a bone-crushing, no-holds-barred, sonic feeding frenzy -- as the young lions devour a sizzling set of their best material with unparalleled intensity!! Capturing facets of their style, sound and group interaction as only a smokin' live performance possibly could, The Third Set is the ultimate live document of a band in peak form and firing on all cylinders.
Ever the musical chameleons, Marbin continues to expand their horizons while pushing their music to the absolute limit! Both founders, guitarist Dani Rabin and saxophonist Danny Markovitch, show more-than-ample evidence of the fire that burns in them. Rabin's chops have never been more hard-hitting, emotional and convincing; with blazing legatos lines alternately punctuating proceedings with Beck-like melodic phrasings and sweet chord comp work, Dani's many hours of off-stage preparation and sustained musical growth are clearly in evidence. Markovitch is equal to the task: playing with more fervor than ever before, with his perfectly-interspersed and -articulated lines weaving their magic.
With Justyn Lawrence and Jae Gentile holding down the fort, laying down tight-knit syncopations and grooves throughout this scalding set, the band never sounded more on top of their game. (... who said "playing with fire" was a bad thing?) The Third Set is the next step forward in the evolution of Marbin, as today's prodigies transform into tomorrow's progressive luminaries. Fasten your seat belts for this one, kids: it hugs the tight corners while refusing to let off the gas!

Bass Virtuoso STANLEY CLARKE Rallies Friends,
Old and New, to Revisit "School Days,"
Bass Folk Songs and More on UP

Available September 30 on Mack Avenue Records

Features Performances from Stewart Copeland,
Chick Corea, and Joe Walsh, Among Others

"When Stanley Clarke was only 25, the word 'legend' was
already being used to describe him. Now, he's a king of the
acoustic and electric jazz worlds..." - NPR

"On electric or acoustic bass, Mr. Clarke is a fleet-fingered marvel
with a particular gift for funk

Legendary bassist Stanley Clarke considers his upcoming Mack Avenue Records release, The Stanley Clarke Band's UP, to be the most energetic, rhythmic and upbeat album that he has ever done -- and with more than 40 solo albums under his belt, that's saying quite a lot. Clarke's signature bass virtuosity and technical acumen is present throughout, but the enjoyment he had in making this album is also apparent. Unlike his predominantly acoustic bass work on the last few albums, UP is almost equal parts electric and acoustic bass.

"My aim here was to make a record with my friends. Every single recording session was nothing but fun," says Clarke. "Surrounding myself with people I enjoy being with made the sessions effortless. Everyone came prepared and ready to play. All were great musicians and they came to the studio to give everything they had."

Much like his last Grammy® Award-winning album, Stanley Clarke Band, this new release features the inclusion of former bandmates pianist/keyboardist Ruslan Sirota and drummer Ronald Bruner, Jr., who toured with him for seven years and were Clarke's co-Grammy® Award-winners for the Best Contemporary Jazz Album of 2011. Two of Clarke's current touring band members, acoustic pianist Beka Gochiashvili and drummer Mike Mitchell, are also represented on the album. Both are quite young, in their teens, and talented way beyond their years.

Among these other friends Clarke invites to shine on UP are: guitarists Joe Walsh, Jimmy Herring and Paul Jackson, Jr.; drummers Stewart Copeland, Gerry Brown and John Robinson; keyboardist Greg Phillinganes; Phil Davis on synthesizer and keyboards; Chick Corea on acoustic piano; saxophonists Kamasi Washington, Doug Webb and Dan Higgins; vocalists Jessica Vautor, Natasha Agrama and Patrice Quinn; trumpeter Gary Grant and trombonist Andy Martin on horns; percussionist Lenny Castro; Nick Mancini on marimba; and the Harlem String Quartet with violinists Ilmar Gavilán and Melissa White, Jaime Amador on viola and cellist Matthew Zalkind.

The first track on the album, a song with a warm, funky and bluesy feel that reminds Clarke of his grandfather, is "Pop Virgil," featuring Michael Jackson's session rhythm section: Robinson, Jackson, Jr. and Phillinganes. Clarke considers "Last Train To Sanity" one of the best pieces he has ever written and it is the only track on the album that deals with the music as a film composition. "I'm so glad that the Harlem String Quartet, who I've toured with a bit over the last year, was willing to be part of this recording," says Clarke.

The title track "UP," is the essence of the album's sensibilities. "Drummer Stewart Copeland was on my mind with this song," says Clarke. "His vibe is one of the most upbeat and positive that I know, and that consciousness carries throughout the song." The bassist also pays homage to George Duke with "Brazilian Love Affair - Dedicated To George Duke," one of his favorite compositions. A tremendous arrangement augmented by robust rhythms and a vigorous samba predominate the song.

As in previous recordings, Clarke unveils more bass compositions in UP that he has dubbed "Bass Folk Songs." Clarke says, "They're very specific compositions. I started writing them when I was much younger and have about 20 now. They are specifically written for a solo bass.""Bass Folk Song #13: Mingus" is a homage to Charles Mingus done on acoustic bass. "Bass Folk Song #7: Tradition" evolved from thoughts on musicians Clarke played with early in his career including Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Joe Henderson and Stan Getz; ironically it's an Alembic electric tenor bass solo. And "Bass Folk Song #14: Dance Of The Giant Hummingbird/Bass Song #15: Eleuthera Island" are two Bass Folk Songs put together for solo acoustic bass.

The collaboration is intuitive with former bandmates Sirota and Bruner, Jr. on "I Have Something To Tell You Tonight," with Washington on sax creating a dreamy improvisational jam. "Trust - Dedicated To Nana" is a straight ahead jazz piece dedicated to Clarke's daughter Nana (Natasha). It arose from a family discussion one evening, and though lyrics would seem appropriate to convey the conversation, here Clarke captures the feel and emotion of the exchange instrumentally. Ramping up the album's ambiance again, Clarke and the musicians have fun with "Gotham City." A fan of superheroes in films and comics since childhood, this is Clarke's homage to the genre.

"I knew the idea of re-recording 'School Days' was potentially dangerous, but just because a song is good and deemed to be a classic doesn't mean you can't record it again," Clarke states. The legendary Jimmy Herring does the dynamic guitar lead on this version and is joined by Gerry Brown, who was the original "School Days" drummer in 1975.

The album concludes with "La Canción de Sofia." Written for Clarke's wife Sofia, who is from Chile, this track is a live performance of an acoustic duet with Chick Corea recorded in 2013 at the Kitara Hall in Sapporo, Japan.

About Stanley Clarke:

With over 40 albums, four-time Grammy® Award-winner Stanley Clarke has attained "living legend" status. Born in Philadelphia, Clarke has been a constant force of nature in American music since the early 1970s with the success of the jazz-fusion group Return To Forever. During his 45+ year career, he has collaborated with Quincy Jones, Stan Getz, Art Blakey, Paul McCartney, Jeff Beck, Keith Richards, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, The Police, Herbie Hancock and many more. Doubling on acoustic and electric bass with equal ferocity, Clarke was the first jazz-fusion bassist ever to headline tours, selling out shows worldwide. Known for his intense dexterity and consummate musicality, Clarke is a true pioneer in jazz and jazz-fusion. Also an accomplished film and TV composer of over 65 projects, Clarke's credits include Boyz N The Hood, the Tina Turner biopic What's Love Got To Do With It, Romeo Must Die, The Transporter and most recently the 2013 blockbuster Best Man Holiday. In 2014, Clarke was invited to become a member of the exclusive Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.

His creativity has been recognized and rewarded in every way imaginable: gold and platinum records, Grammy® Awards, Emmy® nominations, a BMI Award, and virtually every reader's and critic's poll in existence. He was Rolling Stone's very first Jazzman of the Year and bassist winner of Playboy's Music Award for 10 straight years. Clarke was honored with Bass Player Magazine's Lifetime Achievement Award and is a member of Guitar Player Magazine's "Gallery of Greats." In 2004 he was featured in Los Angeles Magazine as one of the Top 50 Most Influential People. He was honored with the key to the city of Philadelphia and put his hands in cement as a 1999 inductee into Hollywood's "Rock Walk" on Sunset Blvd. In 2011 he was honored with the highly prestigious Miles Davis Award at the Montreal Jazz Festival for his entire body of work. Most recently, he won the 2014 DownBeat Magazine's Critic's Poll for Best Electric Bass Player, following a win in the same category the year before.

Clarke believes in giving back to help young musicians hone their skills. He and his wife Sofia established The Stanley Clarke Foundation 13 years ago as a charitable organization offering scholarships to talented young musicians each year.

Turntablist and producer, DJ Krush, is one of the first Japanese artists to be embraced by the global hip-hop world. Beginning by mixing elements  of R & B and Acid Jazz with the big breakbeat backbone of mid- tempo hip-hop. Gradually moving more toward the abstract applying heavy effects and sample manipulation to thick, smart breaks, layered, ambient textures and subtle, inventive scratching. Heard here in duet with ikonoklast bassist/producer Bill Laswell. Shuen shows both musicians seamlessly navigate through the ambient / world beat matrix...a brief journey into sound and rhythm.

His work totally defined the synthesizer of 80s and 90s hip-hop and can still be clearly recognized in the pop hits of today. Caught here in a classic sound / mush up...that moves from delicate to simply raw, intense and bombastic free-form funkafied filth reloaded. In collaboration with multi-directional percussion virtuoso Adam Rudolph, Brooklyn's finest DJ / beat generator - Dr. Israel, Bill Laswell and the original Bronx DJ - Grandmixer DXT (Zulu Nation, Wild Style) best known for introducing scratching to the mainstream on Herbie Hancock's mega hit "Rockit"... Thus spawning a generation of innovative turntablists...The history continues.
