Lars Danielsson - Liberetto (ACT 2012)

A new dream duo in European Jazz: Together with Armenian pianist Tigran the bassist Lars Danielsson discovers new musical spaces and emphasises the freedom of music between chamber jazz, classic and European folk music.

Line Up:
Lars Danielsson / bass, cello, Wurlitzer piano on #8
Tigran / piano, vocals on #7
John Parricelli / guitar
Arve Henriksen / trumpet
Magnus Öström / drums & percussion

Happy coincidences can often lead to extraordinary results. No-one could have foreseen that Lars Danielsson and the Armenian pianist Tigran would pair up to form the new dream duo of the European jazz scene, when in fact the two musicians played their first concert together only one week before the scheduled recordings of Liberetto. It was clear from the first note that two musical soulmates had found each other, and despite it happening by coincidence the result of their meeting was all the more intense. Lars Danielsson says: “Tigran sees my music exactly the way I do and he composes music exactly the way I would do myself. For example, his ‘Svensk Låt’ sounds more Swedish than my songs. It was simply fantastic to record this album with him.” (ACT)

UK: £2m worth of investment to launch the UK’s first outdoor jazz festival.

Jazz FM, Neapolitan Music and Ingenious have unveiled £2m worth of investment to launch the UK’s first outdoor jazz festival.

The Love Supreme Jazz Festival will be a three-day outdoor camping event taking place in Brighton during the summer of 2013 and promises to feature some of the world’s best jazz musicians.

The financial backing for the festival has been realised through Ingenious Entertainment VCTS, which have previously invested in Creamfields, Eighties music festival Rewind Festival and Taste of Christmas, an interactive food exhibition featuring celebrity chefs such as Jamie Oliver, Heston Blumenthal and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. The latest share offer aims to raise up to £25m to back other similar events and is open for investments of at least £3,000 until April 5 this year.

James Carter Organ Trio - At The Crossroads (Emarcy 2011)

The thing about James Carter is, you never know what he'll do next. He can play in virtually any style, in any company, on any saxophone and various woodwind instruments, and sound equally convincing. And his solos can be just as unpredictable. The first piece here starts out as down-home funk and ends somewhere in outer space. In the course of a dozen numbers he plays four saxophones, from soprano to baritone, plus flute. He has phenomenal control of them all and a wonderful sense of swing, which he deploys with immense joie de vivre. It's exhausting but exhilarating. (Dave Gelly / The Observer)

USA: In the 1960s Trilok Gurtu was refused admission at Berkeley

Gurtu himself recounts the story behind it. "As a young musician, I had applied to the Berkeley College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, but was 'refused admission' because they wanted me to play the American way and world music, and the exotic rhythms of India were not yet accepted on the jazz music scene in the United States in the 1960s. So I refused to bend to their wish and was rejected," he says. (Full interview)

Tord Gustavsen Quartet - The Well (ECM 2012)

Tore Brunborg tenor saxophone
Tord Gustavsen piano
Mats Eilertsen double bass
Jarle Vespestad drums
Two years after “Restored, Returned” introduced this line-up and with extensive touring behind them, on “The Well” the four musicians of the Gustavsen Quartet really blossom as a band in a programme of new tunes by Tord. Sax player Tore Brunborg is given an important voice here, his melodic lines combining bluesy sonority and Nordic cry. Gently but effectively propelled by the subtle pulses of drummer Jarle Vespestad and bassist Mats Eilertsen, Gustavsen’s gospel-tinged, unhurried piano playing displays a characteristic warmth and tenderness.

SPAIN: JAZZ IN Blue on 10th February in Malaga

JAZZ IN Blue is a touring festival beginning on 10th February in Malaga. It stages 25 concerts in some of the major cities in Spain, before culminating in Murcia on 18th May. The three month tour takes in Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Malaga, Murcia, Aviles, Valladolid and Santiago de Compostela. The programme features four major recording artists, of which three are signed to the prestigious Blue Note record label; the Erik Truffaz 4tet, the Joe Lovano Quartet Europe, the Robert Glasper Trio and The Bad Plus.

Erik Truffaz is a Swiss-born French jazz trumpeter, infusing elements of hip-hop, rock & roll and dance music into his compositions. He signed with the French EMI label in 1996. Truffaz gained international attention with his second album on Blue Note, ‘The Dawn’, produced together with Pat Muller, Marcello Giuliani and Mark Erbetta. Since then they have produced several Blue Note albums together, such as ‘Bending New Corners’, which became a Silver Album in France. Their 2007 release ‘Arkhangelsk’ is a mixture of pop songs, French chanson, and jazz-groove.

Joe Lovanois an American post-bop jazz saxophonist, alto clarinettist, flautist, and drummer. Since the late 1980s, Lovano has been one of the world's premiere tenor saxophone players earning a Grammy award and several nods on Down Beat magazine's critics' and readers' polls. His live work, specifically ‘Quartets: Live at the Village Vanguard’, gained a Down Beat ‘Jazz Album of the Year’ award. In the late 1990s, he formed the Saxophone Summit with Dave Liebman and Michael Brecker (now deceased, replaced with Ravi Coltrane). His latest album ‘Bird Songs’ released last year primarily features the music of Charlie Parker.
Robert Glasper studied piano at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York and began working with artists from jazz, R&B and hip-hop like Mos Def, Q-Tip, Kanye West, Erykah Badu, Jay-Z and Me’Shell Ndegeoncello.

DAVID S. WARE - Organica ( AUM 2011)

1 .Minus Gravity 1 (sopranino) .16.20
2 .Organica 1 (tenor) .24.31
The entire concert performance of March 13, 2010
Park Slope, Brooklyn

3 .Minus Gravity 2 (sopranino) .22.27
4. Organica 2 (tenor) .14.12
The entire concert performance of November 5, 2010
Umbrella Music Festival, Chicago

Each David S. Ware solo concert performance is a rare and magisterial happening. There were two such events in 2010, and both concerts are presented here in their entirety. The first took place in March at an intimate, invite-only event in Brooklyn; the second took place at the Umbrella Music Festival in Chicago in early November. [Later that month Ware and group recorded Planetary Unknown] In 2010, Ware added the sopranino (pitched one full octave above the alto) to his arsenal, and these concerts were his public debut on the new horn. This is the 2nd volume in a planned series of DSW solo recordings. It is printed in a strictly limited CD edition of 1000.

“Saxophonist David S. Ware’s unaccompanied performance at Elastic on November 5th left the deepest emotional impression [of the Festival],” wrote DownBeat’s Aaron Cohen in his live review of the Chicago set. “His authoritative delivery of bold, stark melodies was reassuringly familiar,” added Signal To Noise’s Bill Meyer in his own review of Ware’s Umbrella Music Festival set, “but the tonality had an exotic Eastern quality. His music was absolutely complete, both at the level of needing no accompaniment but also in the totality of the its emotional, spiritual and physical impact.”

Perico Sambeat - Baladas (Produccions ContraBaix 2011)

(Michel Bedin)

Havona - Terminal 3 (Rara Records 2011

USA: Carmen Lundy Returns With All-New Nine Song Collection, CHANGES

Composer and Jazz Vocalist Teams With Legendary Engineer Don Murray and an All-Star Band to Create an Album of Unprecedented Warmth and Depth Carmen Lundy - Changes

Encountering the work of Carmen Lundy can, admittedly, be a bit surprising for the first time listener. In an age of prepackaged, mass-produced beats and slavishly retro stylings, Lundy offers something that's become increasingly rare: utter authenticity.
A unique and adventurous singer, often compared to the likes of Sarah Vaughn, Betty Carter and Billie Holiday, Lundy writes and performs songs with an emotional vulnerability rarely seen in modern jazz. Her life forays far beyond the boundaries of music – she's an acclaimed actress, teacher and visual artist – inform her work with a sophistication and worldliness that consistently defies the expected. The bottom line? A deep connection that, for the singer's legion of fans, makes the release of each Lundy CD more than an opportunity to hear new music – it's an appointment to catch up with a dear friend.

KICKSTARTER: The Center City Jazz Festival A Jazz project in Philadelphia, PA by Ernest Stuart

"Jazz wipes away this dust of everyday life."- Art Blakey
The Idea: On April 28, the Center City Jazz Festival is set to showcase great new jazz in an exciting, youthful, energetic environment, and introduce a new crop of the Philadelphia area's best up-and-coming artists to both jazz aficionados and the jazz curious.  We're going to take jazz out of concert halls and put it into a number of Center City's best restaurants/bars and music venues clustered around Broad Street, all within easy walking distance of each other.  The music will range from hard-bop to groove and from sultry songstresses to hot Latin jazz -- so organize a group of your friends, catch a show or two or three, have a drink, and enjoy some of the best music you haven't yet heard.
The Reason: Philadelphia has a great jazz history and a bright jazz future.  It's up to us to showcase the talent that we have here and bring the simmer to a boil.

Logistics: 16 bands will perform at multiple venues, including Chris' Jazz Cafe and Time Midtown, between 1pm and 8pm, and a headlining act will perform at 8pm. Normal festival tickets entitle their holders to all-you-can-listen access to all events before 8pm and first-come, first-served access to the headlining show.  VIP tickets entitle their holders to guaranteed admission to the headlining show and access to the artists' hospitality sutie during the festival.  The festival will feature the music of some of the brightest musicians on the jazz scenes in Philadelphia and surrounding areas, including NYC. The festival is being presented with an emphasis on the quality of its music and not simply on the names of its participants.
Your pledges will go towards: artists fees, sound system/equipment rental, marketing materials, advertisements, and instrument (drums & pianos) rentals.

Vijay Iyer Trio - ACCELERANDO (ACT 2012)

Surprising interpretations of traditional jazz, vintage and recent pop and funk tunes as well as Iyer's own infectious compositions: One of the most important pianists (The New Yorker) is back with his award-winning trio.

Line Up:
vijay iyer / piano
stephan crump / bass
marcus gilmore / drums

Accelerando is the follow-up to the Vijay Iyer Trio's Grammy-nominated Historicity – voted the No. 1 jazz album of 2009 around the world, including in the Downbeat critics' poll and by The New York Times

Pianist-composer Vijay Iyer's career has moved on an ever-accelerating arc over the past decade and a half, with the Indian-American artist earning a slew of international honors for his intrepid, multi-hued vision of 21st-century music. The latest chapter of this compelling story in contemporary jazz comes with the Vijay Iyer Trio's Accelerando, an album driven by the visceral, universal, intoxicating experience of rhythm. To be released in March 2012 by the German independent label ACT Music + Vision, Accelerando sees Iyer and his telepathic trio mates – bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore – go both deep and wide. They light up material that ranges from a brace of bold Iyer originals and pieces by great jazz composers (Duke Ellington, Herbie Nichols, Henry Threadgill) to surprising interpretations of vintage and recent pop and funk tunes (Michael Jackson, Heatwave, Flying Lotus). Absorbing and infectious, this is jazz about not only the mind but the body

The concert is a benefit for guitarist Matthew Montfort of the world fusion music band Ancient Future. Funds go to support his recovery from a wrist injury that resulted in the cancellation of several months of performances. Wrist injury recovery donations are also accepted online at ancient-future.com.

Montfort is a pioneer of the scalloped fretboard guitar (an instrument combining qualities of the South Indian vina and the steel string guitar). In 2009, he released his first solo guitar recording, 'Seven Serenades for Scalloped Fretboard Guitar,' which debuted at #8 on the ZMR World Radio Chart. He has performed concerts world wide, including at the Festival Internacional de la Guitarra on the golden coast of Spain near Barcelona and the Mumbai Festival at the Gateway of India in Bombay. Montfort wrote the book 'Ancient Traditions – Future Possibilities: Rhythmic Training Through the Traditions of Africa, Bali, and India,' which has been used by many musicians to improve their rhythm skills. He teaches music privately at his studio in San Rafael, California, and online via Skype.
