USA: Drummer Brian Andres Debuts New Trio Latino Project on "Mayan Suite," Due for May 15 Release
Brian Andres Debuts
New Trio Latino Project
On "Mayan Suite,"
Set for May 15 Release by Bacalao Records
Bay Area Drummer Recalibrates Approach to
Latin Jazz Tradition with Five Covers,
Five Original Compositions
By Pianist Christian Tumalan & Bassist Aaron Germain
April 15, 2020
Drummer Brian Andres unleashes an electrifying new project with the May 15 release of Mayan Suite, the inaugural recording of his Trio Latino, on Bacalao Records. Though it finds Andres stepping back from his longtime leadership of the eight-piece Afro-Cuban Jazz Cartel, the new trio (featuring pianist Christian Tumalan and bassist Aaron Germain) shows itself to be every bit as musically rich as the larger ensemble. What's more, the album's striking originals and zesty interpretations find the band equaling that richness with audacity.
Indeed, Andres created the trio in the hope of finding just such an emboldened style. With fewer voices, he says, "There's much more space to explore, for creative expression, and with that freedom there's greater responsibilities for all three of us."
In fact, Tumalan and Germain fulfill both their freedom and their responsibility in supplying all of Mayan Suite's original compositions. The pianist brings three -- including the title track, a five-part series of hard-grooving miniatures that packs fully realized statements as well as satisfying improvisations into a remarkable seven-and-a-half-minute journey. Yet Tumalan shows no less ambition in the adrenaline rush of "Viento Solar" or the wistful tenderness of "Si Tu Vez." Germain, meanwhile, presents dazzling, dancing Latin syncopation on "Escucha" and a light-stepping aura of mystery on "Higashi Nakano."
L. to r.: Aaron Germain, Brian Andres, Christian Tumalan.
That is not, however, to understate the merit of the musicians' playing. Andres, Tumalan, and Germain balance their considerable chops with invention and eloquence, whether on the thrilling originals or the fiery renditions of Chick Corea's "Got a Match?" and the standard "On Green Dolphin Street." It's not happenstance that all three are rhythm players: Trio Latino's prowess on Mayan Suite, collectively and as soloists, comes in the service of irresistibly kinetic grooves drawn from the Afro-Latin jazz canon.
"Whether it's bomba or mambo, whether there's a hand drummer or not, those rhythms are represented," Andres says. "Aaron and Christian are steeped in those traditions. One of the things about this trio, I wanted us individually to have a voice of our own." Of that, Mayan Suiteleaves no doubt.
Brian Andres was born Nov. 7, 1968 in Cincinnati, Ohio to musical parents: His father played woodwinds, his mother piano and vocals. The younger Andres naturally followed their example, taking up the drums at the age of nine. He continued through high school and into the College-Conservatory of Music before beginning his most intensive education, playing the blues with Cincinnati Slim and the Headhunters. It was the first of many gigs, in many styles.
Yet it was while hearing someone else's band -- a salsa band -- that Andres's life was changed. The neck- and shoulder-twisting polyrhythms took him over completely; he immediately formed his own Latin jazz outfit and began consuming the grooves wherever and whenever he could. He was particularly drawn to the concentration of musicians in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of whom, Paul van Wageningen, was so friendly and inspiring that Andres soon made the move to Northern California himself.
It was there that Andres found his groove, so to speak. He jelled with Latin musicians of all stripes, found work in multiple projects, and fronted his own Afro-Latin Jazz Cartel -- with whom he recorded his first album, Drummers Speak, in 2007.
He has continued at the head of the octet for over a decade: they have received critical acclaim, recorded two more albums (San Francisco, 2013; This Could Be That, 2016), and worked with the cream of the crop of Latin jazz talent in the Bay Area. The Cartel's rhythm section -- the nerve center of the band -- comprises Andres's Trio Latino. The smaller ensemble has taken on a life of its own, one which Andres has now documented with the recording of Mayan Suite.
"Covid-19 and the resulting Shelter in Place order has made life very difficult for everyone," says Andres. "Many musicians, myself included, feel a profound sadness during this time, because we are deprived of our most cherished activity -- performing for an audience. Thankfully we can still connect with our instrument alone, in study and practice, which keeps the spirits up, but there is no substitute for performing. Because of this, Trio Latino is looking to do a live online performance sometime soon. We are working out the details now to be able to provide the best presentation possible."

FRANCE: Enzo Carniel & House of Echo : la vidéo de Wallsdown // nouvel album
Enzo Carniel & House of Echo
Nouvel album Wallsdown
Disponible chez Jazz&People
|

House of Echo :
- Enzo Carniel: Piano & Piano préparé, Synthétiseurs, Sound Design, Electronique, Fender Rhodes, Field Recording, Texte...
- Marc Antoine Perrio: Guitare, Electronique, Sound Design
- Ariel Tessier: Batterie, Percussions, Pierres
- Simon Tailleu: Contrebasse

BELGIUM/USA: Noah Howard-Live In Europe Vol.1 (2020)
Noah Howard was born in 1943 in New Orleans, the heartland of Jazz. Growing up in a city vibrating with Gospel and Dixieland he lived music in all its forms and played music from his childhood in his church. Noah first learned to play the trumpet and later moving on to alto, tenor and soprano saxophone. Noah’s music evolved as he worked with different people in different places, working with Dewey Johnson in Los Angeles and later on in San Francisco, and playing with Sun Ra after moving to New York. As an innovator influenced by John Coltrane and Albert Ayler he became a driver of the early Free Jazz movement and quickly developed into one of the world’s most celebrated alt saxophonists.
He recorded his first LP “Noah Howard Quartet” as a leader in 1965 and his second LP “Noah Howard at Judson Hall” in 1966 both for the groundbreaking ESP Records label. In 1969 he appeared on Frank Wright’s album “One For John” and on “Black Gipsy” with Archie Shepp. His third record, which he lead, working with Arthur Doyle was the internationally acclaimed “Black Ark”. With this, Noah entered the Jazz hall of fame as one of the most brilliant and innovative Free Jazz musicians.
In 1971 he created his own record label AltSax and published most of his music under that label. In the same year he recorded Patterns in the Netherlands with Misha Mengelberg and Han Bennink. Having honed his style and explored many eclectic sounds, he became disenchanted by the lack of appreciation for... more

USA: Mariea Antoinette’s “All My Strings’ pays tribute to the evolution and magic that strings contribute to music
Mariea
Antoinette’s “All My Strings’ pays tribute to the evolution and magic that strings
contribute to music
The urban-jazz harpist’s “Loving
You” courts programmer’s ardor in advance of the release of her third album,
dropping April 24.
SAN DIEGO (30 March 2020): Mariea Antoinette
is upping the ante. Her previous albums have been designed to place the classical
harp in surprising, unimagined contexts: R&B, jazz and hip hop. The motif
expands on her third outing, “All My Strings,” which drops April 24 from
Infinity/Maasai Productions. Teaming with producer Allan Phillips,
who wrote four songs for the album, Antoinette’s focus is vibrational, celebrating
the progress and unique contributions made by stringed instruments in music.
“The
idea was to create an organic sound where most of the instrumentation of the
album is
propelled
by vibrating strings - harp, violins, violas, cellos, guitars and bass guitar. ‘All
My Strings’ is a tribute to the evolution and the magic that strings bring to
music,” said Antoinette, a San Diego native. “I wanted the album to unfold as
a beautiful, unexpected story.”
Antoinette
began telling the story a couple years ago when she released the album opener,
“Overture,” as a single, which went Top 5 on the Billboard chart and was
named Best Jazz Single by the Black Women in Jazz & the Arts
Association. With sweeping strings that build to a dramatic crescendo over
funky beats, the track provided an exciting preview of what was to come on “All
My Strings.” Last fall, Antoinette provided a second glimpse with the release
of “That Thing (Doo Woop),” a reinvention of the Lauryn Hill hit. A
third sampling came when “Loving You” began collecting airplay and playlist
adds last week. The single earned Most Added status at Billboard. Antoinette tells
the story behind why she elected to record the Minnie Riperton signature
tune.
“For
years, Allan (Phillips) had the idea of recording a tribute to my first
producer, the late Carl Evans, a founding member of the contemporary
jazz group Fattburger. Carl had inspired countless musicians in Southern
California and first introduced me and Allan. After years of searching, Allan suggested
‘Loving You.’ The original has a sublime effect that naturally seemed to work
great with the harp. Then Allan gathered the surviving original members of
Fattburger to record the song. We used a hallmark arrangement typical of
Fattburger’s chart-topping style along with the string ensemble that appears
throughout ‘All My Strings.’ The result is a fresh and exciting new version of
a classic so dear to everyone’s heart. It also honors Carl who taught us to
always spread love through our music - no matter what.”
Another
compelling selection from the set is “Garden of Peace,” a soothing original spoken
word number delivered by Antoinette over music by Lonnie Liston Smith.
“I
believe in the healing power of music and spoken word where it drives all the
tension from a room.
With
spoken word, you can take people on an unforgettable journey through the power
of words, something I do on all my projects. That was my intention with ‘Garden
of Peace.’ Coupled with a pure harp solo, it creates a journey that is inspirational,
creative and metaphysical. I love music that comes from an unknown place allowing
you to simply close your eyes and listen.”
Antoinette
wrote the album closer, “Gaia,” and spoke about its spontaneous origins.
“I
was taking a break in the studio after we recorded ‘Sekmet: Lioness Goddess.’ I
began playing the harp, channeling what was in my heart. Allan walked into the
room and asked what I was playing. He said we had to record it. It wasn’t
planned at all. Totally impromptu. Suddenly, 'Gaia’ was born.”
After
earning a master’s degree in harp performance, Antoinette debuted as a solo
artist in 2003 on the Evan’s-produced “Sexy Paradise.” She began serving
as principal harpist with the Los Angeles Southeast Symphony Orchestra
in 2007 and later played a private event for President Barack Obama and First
Lady Michelle Obama. Antoinette also accompanied Ne-Yo during a BET
Awards performance. Her 2015 “Straight From The Harp: Special Edition”
album, produced by Phillips, went Top 5 on the Billboard chart. Antoinette’s
honors include winning a 2018 Black Music Award and the Instrumentalist
of the Year title from the San Diego Prestige Awards the same year. In
addition to playing club, theater and festival dates with her own ensemble,
Antoinette has toured with the female-powered supergroup Jazz in Pink.
“All
My Strings” contains the following songs:
“Overture”
“Yearning
For Your Love”
“All
My Strings”
“Loving
You”
“Ain’t
Playin’”
“That
Thing”
“Sekmet:
Lioness Goddess”

Of Peace”

UK: Jazz Sabbath - Jazz Sabbath (2020)
Jazz Sabbath (1968) were considered to be at the forefront of the new English jazz movement. Their self-titled debut album would be released on 13 Feb 1970, but on Feb 12th founding member and pianist Milton Keanes was hospitalised with a massive heart attack; leaving him fighting for his life. The record company shelved the album and cancelled the scheduled release out of financial uncertainty of releasing a debut album from a band without its musical leader. When Milton was released from hospital in September 1970, he found out that a band from Birmingham, conveniently called ‘Black Sabbath’, had since released two albums containing so-called metal versions of his songs. His recalled albums had been destroyed in a warehouse fire in June 1970; leaving only a few bootleg tapes of Jazz Sabbath’s live performances as proof of existence. The master tapes, believed to be lost in the fire, were found last year. These songs will now finally be heard; proving that the heavy metal band worshipped by millions are in fact nothing more than musical charlatans, thieving the music from a bedridden, hospitalised genius.
