‘RIGHT UP ON’ Oliver Lake, alto saxophone; FLUX Quartet (Passin’ Thru).

Mr. Lake has never paid genre distinctions much heed. This collaboration with the FLUX Quartet is a crucial document of his thinking. “5 Sisters” traffics in modernist blues; pointillism and sweet harmonies alternate in “2016.” When Mr. Lake joins the quartet, his saxophone playing sparks new heights of intensity. SETH COLTER WALLS

Madeleine & Salomon is the meeting of two artists with well-established musical visions: the vocalist and flutist Clotilde and the pianist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, Alexandre Saada.
Long-term friends, they discovered, during a tour of Asia, in 2014, that they shared a common musical aesthetic and decided to form the duo Madeleine & Salomon with its minimalist music stamped in impressionist poetry.

They took advantage of the Melbourne Recital Centre (Australia) invitation in June 2015 to rethink the American Songbook in their decidedly original fashion, and record their first album A Woman’s Journey. This homage to American female protest songstresses is enriched on stage by free improvisations inspired by dreamlike short films specifically edited from stock shots.

A lonely voice, surveying a minor scale and reciting fundamentally feminist lines. Thus commences this first album of Madeleine & Salomon, “A Woman’s Journey”.  A minimalist and delicate duo tackling a humanist and rebellious repertoire. Madeleine sings, Salomon sits at the piano. Madeleine & Salomon, a duo with a natural elegance, “less is more” their essence.

The epic and libertarian duo Madeleine & Salomon embraces with ardor the feminist American songbook to cover it with loving-kindness tinged with a minimalistic music and with a deep and incandescent chant. Their 1st album A Woman’s Journey reveals a graceful and unexpected reinterpretation of a humanist and rebellious repertoirefrom Nina Simone to Janis Joplin to Billie Holiday to Josephine Baker.

"Moving Day,"
Second CD by Bassist/Composer Mark Wade,
Set for February 2 Release
On the Mark Wade Music Label

Follow-Up to Wade's Acclaimed 2015 Debut "Event Horizon"
Documents Evolution of His Trio
With Pianist Tim Harrison & Drummer Scott Neumann

CD Release Shows Scheduled for

March 3, Club Bonafide, NYC

December 18, 2017

Mark Wade Trio Moving DayOn their 2015 debut, Event Horizon, bassist/composer Mark Wade and his trio displayed an uncanny empathy and earned a warm reception from press, radio, and fans. Moving Day, his sophomore recording which will be released February 2 by his label Mark Wade Music, showcases the evolution of the trio's tight, seemingly telepathic interplay.

"We've had a chance to develop a sound and identity and an understanding of one another as an ensemble. We had some of that with the first CD," he explains, citing his bandmates Tim Harrison, on piano, and drummer Scott Neumann. "But this CD, three years later, shows that we've really formed some strong chemistry together. By the time we got to the recording session, we had been playing some of these tunes live in front of audiences a number of times."

Wade started writing music for Moving Day a few months after the release of Event Horizon, and the new album includes seven harmonically and rhythmically challenging originals as well as inventive arrangements of the standards "Autumn Leaves" and "A Night in Tunisia" (reinterpreted as "Another Night in Tunisia"). With the exception of "In the Fading Rays of Sunlight," the gentle waltz that closes Moving Day, all of the selections utilize frequent meter changes.

The meter shifts are not immediately obvious, however, due to the way Wade, Harrison, and Neumann keep their performances flowing so perfectly. "There aren't many tunes that don't have at least one or two meter changes," Wade explains. "It wasn't my intention to do that. It was just kind of the way the music worked out."

Mark Wade

Mark Wade was born on December 29, 1974, outside Detroit in Livonia, MI. He taught himself to play bass guitar at 14 in Long Valley, NJ. During his senior year in high school in Morristown, NJ, he joined the Royal Nonesuch, a rock quartet for which he began writing original songs.

He attended New York University, studying with renowned bassist Mike Richmond, who encouraged him to take up acoustic bass for jazz and to hone his arco technique and sight-reading abilities in order to better play European classical music. He received a B.A. in music with a concentration in jazz in 1997. Wade considers Richmond, whose extensive resume includes work with Stan Getz, Jack DeJohnette, Lee Konitz, and Mingus Dynasty, a major influence, along with Ray Brown, Paul Chambers, Scott LaFaro, Michael Moore, and Red Mitchell.

Over the past 20 years, Wade has balanced his musical schedule between jazz, classical, and commercial gigs. His jazz credits include playing in the string section for the Jimmy Heath Big Band's performances of Ernie Wilkins's Four Black Immortals; backing singer Stacey Kent on The Today Show; playing with trumpeter Bill Warfield's New York Jazz Repertory Orchestra; and recording with singer Elli Fordyce. Wade has performed with numerous classical ensembles, including the Key West Symphony backing guitarist Sharon Isbin and violinist Robert McDuffie, both of them Grammy winners. He is presently principal bassist of the Bronx Opera Company.

Bill Warfield, who directs the jazz program at Lehigh University (where Scott Neumann and Tim Harrison also teach), invited Wade to join the faculty in February 2017. The bassist commutes one day a week from his home in Queens to the university in Bethlehem, PA, to give private lessons on both acoustic and electric basses.

The Mark Wade Trio's gigs at Club Bonafide in Manhattan, Flushing Town Hall in Queens, and other venues have greatly increased since the release of Event Horizon, and Wade's own raised profile resulted in his landing a spot in the 2016 DownBeat Readers' Poll as one of the year's Top 10 bassists. The ensemble had its first appearance in Europe in late 2017, including a performance at the Sunside Sunset Club in Paris. Interest in the trio's music was sparked in Europe when the Edition 46 label in Berlin reissued Event Horizon a year after Wade released it himself in the U.S.

Wade does not take for granted the rapport he, Harrison, and Neumann have established, which is evident in their ability to flawlessly navigate consistently challenging original compositions and arrangements in a flowing, unforced manner. "I'm really lucky that I have guys to work with to put this together," Wade says. "I'm only one-third of the sound. It takes all three of us to make it happen, and they do a really great job with it. We've been able to develop a certain kind of language together that helps bring out something deeper than just your average run-of-the-mill trio that you might throw together at a session."

The Mark Wade Trio will be performing CD release shows at the Airtrain Jazz Festival, Jamaica, NY, on 2/15, and Club Bonafide in NYC, 3/3.

USA: Nicole Mitchell - Mandorla Awakening II Emerging Worlds” (FPE)

"One of the most exciting jazz soloists and composers in the world" --Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader

Blurring the edges between philosophy and mysticism, modern art and radical political critique, the Afrofuturist impulse has been a cultural force since the mid-20th century. That’s when jazz visionary Sun Ra and his Arkestra first touched down on Planet Earth and told humanity that space (outer and inner) is indeed the place. It’s an impulse that in the new millennium has only grown more diverse thanks to a proliferating number of African-American musicians who use Afrofuturism as a platform to launch their own, unique visions. Among these explorers are cosmic jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington, post-everything beat maker Flying Lotus, R&B cyborg Janelle Monáe and dystopian noise-rappers Death Grips.

The innovative, boundary-smashing work of Nicole Mitchell, whom Chicago Reader music critic Peter Margasak has hailed as the “greatest living flutist in jazz”, has contributed new life to Afrofuturism in the 21st Century. A voracious reader of science fiction since her youth (Afrofuturist author Octavia E. Butler in particular has exerted a heavy influence on her music), the musician, composer and educator has released a string of albums that fold themes

USA: Lisa Hilton-Escapism(2017)

Escapism

for Lisa Hilton's 20th release as a leader, she wanted to promote peace, tranquility and positive energy so that her listeners would be energized and uplifted. With Escapism, she succeeds via nine original compositions and the Lerner & Lane standard title On A Clear Daywhile accompanied by saxophonist JD Allen, trumpeter Terell Stafford, bassist Gregg August and drummer Rudy Royston. Lisa's breadth of creativity and range of ideas are astounding as she reveals the virtuosity of her pianism, musicality and artful sound. Among the more memorable compositions are Hot Summer Samba and Meltdown both of which feature fast paced melodic ideas that stretch and loosen any preconceived notions of what lays beneath the surface of these sizzlers. JD Allen's saxophonics and Terell Stafford's flugelhorn magic underline Lisa's signature chops on Zero Gravity while her version of the Lerner & Lane classic On A Clear Day is calming and inspiring as she celebrates the artistry of these composers through her versatile reading. Grounded in the jazz tradition, pianist Lisa Hilton has a lot to say. So listen. And then listen again. --Sounds of Timeless Jazz

Escapism blows open your mind and ears....this is a hot, happening date that charts a new course for pianist Hilton. Tasty jamming throughout. Well done. --Midwest Record

A piano that seduces & captivates; a true passion in motion from the exquisite pianist Lisa Hilton. --Actual Jazz/Uruguay

USA: Jaimie Branch - “Fly Or Die” (International Anthem

A mainstay of the Chicago jazz scene and an active recent addition to the New York scene, Jaimie Branch is an avant-garde trumpeter known for her “ghostly sounds," says The New York Times, and for "sucker punching" crowds straight from the jump off, says Time Out. Her classical training and “unique voice capable of transforming every ensemble of which she is a part” (Jazz Right Now) has contributed to a wide range of projects not only in jazz but also punk, noise, indie rock, electronic and hip-hop. Branch’s work as a composer and a producer, as well as a sideman for the likes of William Parker, Matana Roberts, TV on the Radio and Spoon, is all on display in her debut record Fly or Die – a dynamic 35-minute ride that dares listeners to open their minds to music that knows no genre, no gender, no limits.

“It’s a true joy to listen to Jaimie Branch’s Fly or Die. Jaimie’s masterful trumpet playing sits at the helm of this gorgeous record, richly supported by a stellar cast of musicians, and upheld by strong and provocative composition.” – Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire)

"Super out tunes that continually open new doors to strange, sweet, and psychedelic grooves. Band is constantly cracking some ancient alien code here. Seamless and effortless compositions from Branch. An absolute “must jam” for anyone interested in the future of mind expansion." – Ryley Walker

“Fly or Die
Fleet footed solar cry
Breath of a neon dragon
Stomping Whaling Kryptonite
Delicate as thin ice on the rim of a red rose petal
Shatters all
Fresh as the beginning after the end of the world
Sonic sowing
New clay
Pot of gold
Die or Fly
You choose”

Switzerland: NEW RELEASE | Luise Volkmann will publish Eudaimonia on 11/24

Dear friends of NWOG Records,
we are happy to announce  Luise Volkmann`s  debut albumHer band named Été Large has  just released a record named Eudaimonia on NWOG!
Thank God, the days when small formations inevitably had to be combos and big ensembles in jazz necessarily were big bands are long gone. Just like the days when jazz musicians had to chose between playing free or traditional jazz. Nowadays, the range of combinations and creative levels in jazz is much broader. The CD “Eudaimonia” by Luise Volkmann, a young saxophonist and flutist, describes this blissful playground of unlimited expressive possibilities in a very entertaining way.
Luise Volkmann is a passionate storyteller or, if you will, a subtle portraitist – two traits that ideally coincide. The story she wants to tell is always at the heart of all her pieces. She reflects on the form and structure but also on the dynamics and the dramatic composition that the storytelling should have and then finds the musicians she needs for her narrative. For her cycle “Eudaimonia” she brought together a group of 12 partners in musical crime who not only represent different scenes but even partly diverging musical concepts that nevertheless come together almost perfectly in their formation Été Large.
Her compositions are of great complexity and even greater variety of forms but still, their narrative structure is easy to understand, varied and entertaining. The fact that this young musician manages this balancing act on her debut CD at a very high level is not only unusual but also exciting and promising.
