USA: Woody Shaw -The Tour - Volume Two(2017)
UK: John Potter-Secret History - Josquin / Victoria(2017)
Tomas Luis de Victoria and Josquin Desprez were not contemporaries, they lived and worked in different countries, and perhaps shared little in terms of abstract compositional style. Yet throughout Europe, generations of musicians recognized them as kindred spirits, and tablature versions of their masses and motets circulated amongst lutenists. For John Potter, this is the secret life of the music in historical terms its real life. In this characteristically creative project, Potter - joined by Trio Mediaeval singer Anna Maria Friman and three outstanding vihuela players - explores what happens to music after it is composed. The album, produced by Manfred Eicher, was recorded at the St Gerold monastery in the Austrian mountains, where Potter previously contributed to Officium and other recordings with the Hilliard Ensemble and with The Dowland Project.
GERMANY: Tingvall Trio - cirklar(2017)
2017 release. To claim that the world has plenty of jazz piano trios on hand is no exaggeration: in recent years the basic classic combo has been experiencing a resounding revival. Yet a searching look among the trios on tour for the essence of this 'movement' - when it all comes down to audience acceptance and an unmistakable sound all it's own - the Tingvall Trio from Hamburg stands out on an international scale.. Martin Tingvall, pianist, hymn writer and the man who gave the band it's name, comments on the new compositions: "The songs always kick things off for us. With this album I've tried to compose in a way that points out new directions to us. We're testing new forms of expression, but at the same time we naturally want to be recognized as the Tingvall Trio. This time the music is clearly the boss, not the trio."

USA: Dave Soldier- The Eighth Hour Of Amdua(2017)
Marshall Allen, the leader of the Sun Ra Arkestra, is featured in the part of the Egyptian god Sun Ra, in Dave Soldier's new classical/jazz/electronic opera based on the oldest musical score known, the 8th hour of the Book of the Amduat. In this verison from 1425 BC, the sounds and music are clearly specified during Sun Ra's nightly travels on the underworld river to age, die, and be reborn to rise again every morning. The ancient hieroglyphs are translated to Italian by Egyptologist Ritat Lucarrelli (professor at UC Berkely) and the parts of the other gods and demons are sung by mezzosoprano (Sahoko Sato Timpone from the Metropolitan Opera) and a choir and by additional improvisers (Dan Blacksberg, Nick Millevoi, Michael Winograd, Rebecca Cherry) with a classical orchestra. Marshall Allen plays the alto saxophone and EWI electronic wind instrument as Sun Ra, who doesn't speak in the book but calls the other gods and demons, and this 93 year old master musician, performing in a version of the world's oldest musical text, sounds more Futuristic than anyone else ever has.
USA: Pete Malinverni Trio- Heaven (2017)
Heaven is pianist/composer Pete Malinverni's latest trio outing, featuring with Ben Allison, bass and Akira Tana, drums. Also featured on one guest selection each are Karrin Allyson (voice), Jon Faddis (trumpet) and Steve Wilson (alto saxophone). After the loss of his wife, singer Jody Sandhaus, and an (ultimately false) health scare of his own, Malinverni was inspired to make a recording of music originating from - and directed overtly to - the spirit. To that end, he's chosen some American Spirituals, some Ellington compositions, one by Curtis Mayfield, another by Hungarian-Jewish martyr Hannah Senesh and an original Malinverni take on Psalm 23. The music is contemplative but joyful, too. It expresses a wonder at the life we live and a realization that, for those who choose to see it that way, this, indeed is Heaven.

And they religiously practice the first commandment of the old school: “Thou shalt give the audience a great show!” do for you? is proof that jazz roots grow into exciting new tunes, thrive in new times, and produce new jazz masters. The album showcases new compositions by Bryant and Fabian, with a tune by Marsalis, and the Trio’s collective mastery and virtuosity is consistently front and center. These artists have not only mastered every corner of the tradition—they can do anything. The virtuostic Bryant on saxophone, a groovy solo by Fabian mixing funk and hip-hop flavor, expert punctuation by Marsalis on drums, lightning speed as quick and exciting as it is clean—they can do anything. Of A Certain Age by Bryant, with its nostalgic ballad feel and an artful performance by the Trio, could easily pass for a jazz standard. The Band never loses its tightness...through impressive solo fills from Marsalis, Fabian’s gloriously clear pizzicato, pitch bends and grooves...Marsalis’ skillful Brazilian rhythms and timbres...unrelenting and funky drum and bass grooves, blazing saxophone melodies...the Band keeps surprising and amazing, and leaves us wowed. There’s an undeniable connection between music and culture, but maybe sometimes we imagine that bond to be a little too strict. While specific musical elements rose from distinct regions of the world, it’s unrealistic to put those pieces into boxes.
There’s a natural ebb and flow between musicians that results in a flexible exchange of cultural elements, breaking down restrictions and making music a bit more maleable. We can’t easily describe a country’s music by pointing to a few musical elements; that’s an over simplification that doesn’t reflect the modern musical state of any location. In today’s world, cultural has been re-contextualized through a variety of perspectives, making connections readily apparent.
Drummer Ignacio Berroa has embraced this idea of cultural connections and explores the concept on his new album, Straight Ahead From Havana. On the recording, he takes standards from the Cuban repertoire and re-imagines them in a straight-ahead jazz context. Berroa has a history of exploring this connection, most notably during his time with jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie. The iconic trumpet player embraced every cultural element in music, viewing them all as equals while respecting their differences. Berroa has carried that into his own work as a leader on fantastic albums such as Codes and Heritage and Passion. Today’s video features a sneak peek at Straight Ahead From Havana, letting us take a look at Berroa’s outstanding playing in the studio, where he shows us music transcending cultural elements.

USA: The JT Project - Another Chance(TRIPPIN & RHYTHM 2017)
The JT Project: a multi-talented force of sound that brings forth a
unique musical conceptualization: 'a new genre in music called JT'.
Adventurous and bold, Jacob Webb (Keyboards/Bass) and Todd Schefflin
(Saxophone), leaders of The JT Project, knew that it would take more
than just a passing interest in music to become the creative force that
they envisioned. Jacob commands each stroke on the keyboard to awaken
the soul with a touch of fire, and Todd caresses the notes to life with
every breath.
Todd hailing from Philadelphia, and Jacob from Kansas City, the two musician's paths collided in 2007 at the prestigious William Paterson University music department in New Jersey. After an immediate musical connection, Jacob and Todd started writing music together, which eventually led to the formation of The JT Project in 2009.
The JT Project has exponentially expanded into a musical collective, incorporating the most talented Jazz and Soul musicians in New York City.

ISRAEL: Avishai Cohen Quartet-Cross My Palm With Silver(ECM 2017)
A year after his impressionistic, critically-lauded ECM debut Into The Silence, trumpeter Avishai Cohen’s Cross My Palm With Silver introduces
a programme of new pieces which put the focus on the ensemble, on
teamwork, with a quartet of the highest calibre. The adroit, almost
telepathic interplay among the musicians allows Avishai Cohen to soar,
making it clear why he is one of the most talked-about jazz musicians on
the contemporary scene. “All of these people together are my dream
team”, says the charismatic trumpeter of fellow players Yonathan
Avishai, Barak Mori and Nasheet Waits, who share his sense for daring
improvisation and his feeling for structure. “I feel we’re in a perfect
place with the balance. It’s open and there’s so much room for the
improvisation to take the music any place we can. At the same time the
composition is very specific and the vibe is very direct and thought
about.” As with Into The Silence, Cross My Palm With Silver was
produced by Manfred Eicher at Studios La Buissonne in the south of
France. It is issued on the eve of a major European tour, with
concerts in France, Italy, Spain, Luxembourg, United Kingdom,
Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands.

USA: Ornette At 12/Crisis (Real Gone Music 2017)
As the man who basically invented free jazz and even coined the term, Ornette Coleman has had the vast majority of his catalog reissued on CD, and rightfully so. But there are two records, both released on the legendary Impulse! label, that have somehow escaped digitization until now, The first, 1969’s Ornette at 12, features Ornette on alto sax, trumpet, and violin with Dewey Redman on tenor sax, long-time collaborator Charlie Haden on bass, and son Denardo (age 12 at the time of the 1968 recording) on drums. The jazz world was still getting over the effrontery of Denardo playing drums—he had made his debut two years earlier on The Empty Foxhole—which may explain why this one’s remained in the vaults till now. But Redman’s playing on tenor is just stellar, and Ornette’s untrained trumpet and violin technique make a nice foil for Denardo’s fresh approach to the traps. Another boundary-pushing record in a career full of them. But if it’s a puzzle that Ornette at 12 has not been previously reissued, it’s a downright mystery why 1972’s Crisis also hasn’t come out; recorded live in 1969 at N.Y.U. with a killer band of Redman, Haden, Denardo, and Don Cherry on flute and trumpet, it takes its place with Broken Shadows and Science Fiction as one of Ornette’s great small group recordings of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. The version of Haden’s “Song for Che” is one of the best on record, the rendition of “Broken Shadows” here is simply beautiful, which is not a term many associate with Coleman’s playing, and the addition of Don Cherry—fresh from his own experiments in Indian and African music—spices up what is already a pretty heady brew. Real Gone Music’s two-for-one reissue of this pair of albums features the original gatefold album art and an essay by Howard Mandel, author of Miles, Ornette, Cecil: Jazz Beyond Jazz. Remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision from original tape sources.
Roscoe Mitchell-Bells For The South Side(ecm 2017)
Roscoe Mitchell contrasts and – for the first time - combines the sounds and distinctive characters of his four trios in an exhilarating double album recorded at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art. Multi-instrumentalist and composer Mitchell had been invited to premiere new music at the museum, in the context of the exhibition The Freedom Principle, which celebrated the directions in music and art set in motion by the AACM on Chicago’s South Side. Starting out by exploring “Spatial Aspects of the Sound”, with the ensemble featuring both Craig Taborn and Tyshawn Sorey on pianos, Mitchell offers what amounts to a composer self-portrait in continually changing colours and textures, reflecting on his own history while looking toward the future. Two pieces - including the title composition – draw upon the full percussion instrumentarium of the Art Ensemble of Chicago – a panorama of gongs, bells, rattles, sirens, hand drums and more. Along the way there are remarkable contributions by all participants, among them a lyrical bass guitar feature for Jaribu Shahid on “EP 7849”, a heart-dilating solo by Tani Tabbal on “Cards for Drums”, an extended trumpet feature for Hugh Ragin on “Bells for the South Side”, evocative and atmospheric electronics from Craig Taborn and James Fei on “Red Moon in the Sky”, and plenty of Mitchell’s powerhouse saxophones throughout, from the piercing sopranino down to the mighty bass sax. The performance is concluded with “Odwalla”, the Mitchell-composed theme song of the Art Ensemble.

UK: Idris Rahman, Leon Brichard, Tom Skinner-WILDFLOWER (2017)
Wildflower is a trio comprising Idris Rahman (sax), Leon Brichard (bass) and Tom Skinner (drums).
The trio takes you on an intense, meditative and spiritual musical journey that embodies the spirit of freedom. Based around hypnotic grooves laid down by Brichard’s unswervingly solid bass lines, drummer Skinner plays around artfully with the beats, grooving hard in constantly shifting, unexpected turns of rhythmic play. Rahman’s contributions range from subtle conversational interplay to loudly expressed angry passion to the most delicate of whispers, conveying a depth of emotion and a deep sense of musical structure withIn an ever changing sea of musical conversation.
Using simple, arresting melodies as a starting point, the trio create freely improvised waves of emotion ranging from powerful climaxes to hauntingly beautiful breath-like passages and everything in-between, creating unique forms and structures that react to the acoustics and the atmosphere of the situation.
Taking inspiration from the spiritual jazz pioneers such as John and Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Yusef Lateef and Sun Ra, compositional influences range from Gnawa music to modal jazz to Bengali folk music but the scope is wider still and the important unifying factor is the spontaneous communication and interplay between the three musicians. Rather than having a tight rigid structure, the tunes are allowed to breathe and develop into new unexplored forms, allowing fresh interpretations that make each performance a unique experience.
The album is a collection of live and studio recordings that have been recorded and mixed by the band.

"The Mehmet Polat Trio are one of the world’s most distinctive and cutting-edge groups in Middle Eastern and Turkish music. Their songs are epic and picturesque, incorporating elements of West African, Andalucian, Romany and Balkan sounds as well. Bandleader and oud virtuoso Polat can play with blazing speed if he wants, but he typically prefers a dynamically charged approach. His compositions have a cinematic sensibility that gets very dark on occasion. In this group he’s joined by kora player Dymphi Peeters and ney flutist Sinan Arat. Their show last summer at Lincoln Center was one of the most compelling concerts of the year." New York Music Daily, USA (click for the full review)
