NORWAY: Ivar Grydeland - Stop Freeze Wait Eat (Hubro 2015)

Ivar Grydeland is probably best known as a member of improvisational bands such as Huntsville and Ballrogg as well as Dans les Arbres (ECM), which was nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize this year. He also plays distinctive pop with Hanne Hukkelberg and instrumental rock with the band Finland, who released their debut album on the Hubro label earlier this year.
His solo debut album, Bathymetric Modes, was released in 2012 and received glowing reviews. All About Jazz’s reviewer wrote: “Grydeland has delivered an album that, in its combination of lyrical beauty, attractive sound worlds and left-of-center concerns, deserves to place him on the same international radar alongside his better-known Norwegian colleagues.”
The album Stop Freeze Wait Eat spins a fascinatingly gentle and complex spider web connecting categories and genres such as hi-fi and lo-fi, drones, abstract electronica, improv and Americana. Loren Connors, Oren Ambarchi and Terry Riley are obvious references here. The album is the result of work with an artistic PhD project called “Ensemble of Me” at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo. Ivar wanted to make it possible to create ensemble music as a solo performer. He tried to forge an “extended now” by improvising on top of sounds that he had played 10-12 seconds earlier. “I work in the same way that I imagine a visual artist works: taking a step back to reconsider before he returns to the canvas. I like that alternation between intuition and reflection when I’m working in the studio.”
Ivar Grydeland plays acoustic and electric guitars, pedal steel and banjo, using a mixture of preparation techniques, fingerpicking, various bows, metal, propellers and electronics. He teaches at the Norwegian Academy of Music, and is one of the founders of the Sofa label. Grydeland’s original and personal music can be perceived as both abstract and demanding, but is at the same time appealing as it draws the listener into a range of musical landscapes and atmospheres.

USA: Mack Avenue Records Congratulates 2016 NEA Jazz Master Gary Burton on Receiving the Nation's Highest Honor in Jazz

2016 NEA Jazz Master Gary Burton on
Receiving the Nation's Highest Honor in Jazz

2016 NEA Jazz Masters to be Honored with
Free Concert at John F. Kennedy Center

The NEA Jazz Masters award is the highest honor that our nation bestows on a jazz musician and includes a cash award of $25,000 and an award ceremony and celebratory concert, among other activities. As part of the National Endowment for the Arts' 50th anniversary events, the annual NEA Jazz Masters celebration will take place in on April 4, 2016 in the nation's capital in collaboration with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
The National Endowment for the Arts will honor four jazz leaders with the 2016 NEA Jazz Masters award for their significant accomplishments in the field. This year's honorees range from fiery saxophonists who cut their teeth with the legendary John Coltrane, to a vibraphonist who reshaped the direction of jazz by introducing rock elements, to one who has dedicated her life to assisting jazz musicians in need.

Legendary vibraphonist, bandleader and educator, Gary Burton, was one of the progenitors of jazz fusion in the late 1960s. His four-mallet technique on the vibraphone gave the instrument a new musical vocabulary in jazz and a fuller, more piano-like sound than the traditional two-mallet approach. Burton steps into the role alongside the other 2016 honorees: musician's advocate, Wendy Oxenhorn, and saxophonists/composers Pharoah Sanders and Archie Shepp.

NEA Jazz Master awards are bestowed on living individuals on the basis of nominations from the public including the jazz community. The NEA encourages nominations of a broad range of men and women who have been significant to the field of jazz, through vocals, instrumental performance, creative leadership, and education.

A free concert honoring the 2016 NEA Jazz Masters will be presented at 8:00pm on Monday, April 4, 2016, at the Kennedy Center's Concert Hall and also available in a live video stream at arts.gov, Kennedy-Center.org, and NPR.org/Music. In addition, as a way of expanding opportunities for the public to engage with the artists and their music, the celebration will include other activities April 2-5, such as moderated panel discussions and listening parties at NPR headquarters in Washington, DC, and educational opportunities for local DC students, which will feature some of the 2016 NEA Jazz Masters. More details on these events, including how to obtain tickets for the April 4 concert, will be announced in early 2016.

USA: Creating Future Of Jazz With Gismart Application Company

With a driving passion for music and mobile, Gismart (http://www.gismart.com) announces they have joined in partnership with First International Online Jazz Competition (http://www.madeinnyjazz.com) to benefit the participants to create the future of jazz music.
Next year's event will announce a special category where participants could enter the competition using music applications created by Gismart such as those already widely used by professional musicians. “I believe the Jazz industry should follow technology trends in order to stay relevant,” says Misha Brovkin, Founder of Made In New York Jazz Competition. “The sky is the limit in terms of promotions, features, and functions that we are able to offer our community.”
Music apps aren't just for streaming anymore. According to a recent Yahoo Finance story, 'The popularity of music apps among smartphone users increased at an unexpected rate in June this year'. It seems that streaming services drive the market, however, music making is the upward trend. According to an article at Synthtopia.com, iOS devices have overtaken the sales of Windows base computers stating that 'The number of musicians using mobile devices as their primary DAW is likely to continue to grow. In the last five years, many musicians have gone from considering mobile devices toys, to using them as significant tools for things like patch creation, synthesis, MIDI control and more. Musicians are now beginning to use mobile devices as a ‘mobile DAW’, for things like beat-making and capturing ideas'.
Gismart has been producing high quality music apps available on Googleplay, in the iTunes App store, on Amazon.com and YouTube for the iOS and Android platforms for over four years. Apps such as Real Guitar, Real Piano, Real Drums, and Real Metronome.
“We are very excited about bringing these two creative worlds together for the first time,” says Gismart representative. “We feel that this partnership has the possibility of opening doors to many people across the globe who would other wise not be able to participate and in turn offer the world new creative outlets in music never before seen on such a large stage.”
The competition is open online now. Participants need only register their projects and upload them on the page provided. Once the project video has been approved, the participant can complete the registration process.
Those who entered Made In New York Jazz Competition have a chance at winning a cash prize of $3000, plus 10% of the registration fees, The Ultimate Controller KAWAI VPC1 Ultra-Realistic grand piano touch to complete your virtual piano experience. A new standard in performance. Ivory II Grand Pianos and Ivory II American Concert D from Synthogy, Impression Cymbals set as well as a chance at international recognition as the winner will be flown to New York City (Sponsored by Kawai) to participate as a headline performer in the 'Made In New York Jazz Competition Gala Concert' with American Jazz Legends.

CANADA/USA: For Your Consideration 58th Annual Grammy Awards Halie Loren’s 2015 release “Butterfly Blue”

“Halie Loren glides in flight on her new album Butterfly Blue from newly composed musical poetry to the songbook of American music on the wings of a deepening and darkening musical sense, an extraordinary accompanying group of musicians and a voice to wring out all the passion, pain and promise of living. We are captives of the cages of our lives but the spirit still soars.”
– The International Review of Music (Brian Arsenault), June 2015

“Gifted vocalist and composer Halie Loren’s latest recording (her eighth) is all about transformation and the resilient nature of the human heart. In keeping with these themes, Alaskan-born Loren has deftly selected a musical palette that incorporates not only beloved standards from The Great American Songbook, but well-written contemporary and original compositions as well as a beloved jazz anthem of hope.”
– TheWholeNote.com (Lesley Mitchell-Clarke), September 2015

USA: PÉREZ PATITUCCI BLADE- Children of the Light( 2015)

Danilo Pérez, John Patitucci and Brian Blade have been three quarters of the extraordinary Wayne Shorter Quartet for more than a decade. Since, they’ve also continued their individual careers as leaders of their own projects and groups. Now, on Children of the Light, they step forward as a trio for the first time with an imagination and fearlessness in their approach that defies the roles and ways of a trio in both obvious and subtle ways.

The Jim Snidero Quintet pays tribute to the great Phil Woods, who passed away on September 29th. Snidero first met Woods in 1975, then studied with him until moving to New York in the early 1980's. They kept in contact over the years, with their last visit being in June.

"Phil was the guy that inspired me to commit to the music, and for that, I will always be grateful" states Snidero. "Without question, he was one of the greatest jazz musicians and alto saxophone players of all time".

Coincidently, a feature article appearing in the June issue of Jazz Times focused on the long-time relationship between this grand master and understudy. Included in the article are many words of advice from Woods ("Don't do this unless you've got the burn in your belly") and Woods stating that Snidero is now a "masterful artist". USA/Papers: John Coltrane and the Development of a Radical Black Aesthetic

Thomas Barker Thomas Barker Durham UniversityMusic, Graduate Student
The purpose of this article is to consider the ways that Coltrane’s music might be said to have taken on the character of what Adorno called the ‘autonomous work of art’ in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Building upon the 1999 essay by Nick Nesbit entitled ‘Sounding Autonomy: Adorno, Coltrane, and Jazz,’ this article aims to provide a critical theory of Coltrane’s aesthetics, examining the ways that dominant socio-political tendencies became objectified within Coltrane’s music through his interaction with the historically formed musical material. Unlike Nesbit, however, this study...
