Red is the third album in Beata Pater’s color series, her sixth solo recording. With her previous release Blue, Beata’s voice became the lead instrument, vocalizing in original compositions expressing her unique tone and character, leading to the album receiving airplay around the globe. In Red, Beata expresses her unique jazz vocalizations with an energetic infectious groove built by a stalwart of musicians.

Comparisons have been made to Flora Purim and Tania Maria, with the feeling and intensity of Sarah and Nina.

She started going to music school in Poland when she was six and was extensively trained as a violinist. Because her father loved a wide variety of music, she not only grew up hearing classical music but jazz and pop. Among those who she has cited as early inspirations were Donny Hathaway, Jaco Pastorius, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Also very important was her violin professor’s wife, who noticed her strong voice when she was eight and helped her get started as a singer with the Warsaw opera.

After completion of her education in England, she had an opportunity to go to Japan for six months, receiving a contract with CBS/Sony as a recording session artist. The six months eventually became ten years. During her decade in Japan, Beata was constantly busy, making commercials, singing in movies, appearing on a countless number of sessions, and working as a Yamaha School of Music educator. She was also a regular in jazz clubs, performing with such jazz artists as pianist Walter Bishop Jr. and drummer Jimmy Smith in addition to talented local musicians. She toured Asia, performed at Birdland in Manhattan and grew to love acoustic straight ahead jazz. Moving to the United States in the 1990’s, Beata has continued to compose, perform, and produce her unique fusion of the world of music.

Unique, colorful, and musically rewarding are adjectives that perfectly fit the career and music of Beata Pater, an international recording artist who after all of her accomplishments still gives one the impression that the best is yet to come.

April is Jazz Appreciation Month

April Means Jazz

And YOU can help spread the word about jazz while promoting your own jazz activities by participating in the JazzApril campaign

The Smithsonian Museum has designated April as Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) . UNESCO, in partnership with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, has declared April 30 to be International Jazz Day (IJD)The U.S. Conference of Mayors is urging its members to support local efforts to celebrate both JAM and IJD in 2013.

Throughout the U.S. and around the world, jazz musicians and supporters are planning special April concerts and events. The month's activities will reach a crescendo on April 30, when Herbie Hancock and other jazz luminaries perform in a day-long series of Jazz Day concerts livestreamed from Istanbul, Turkey.

Through the Jazz April campaign, the Jazz Journalists Association is supporting these efforts by: encouraging and helping media makers, musicians, venues, businesses and organizations, as well as individual fans and listeners, to use traditional, online and social media as well as other means to spread the word that “April is Jazz Month.” working with local jazz groups to raise the profile of jazz in their communities by designating and celebrating local “Jazz Heroes” and gaining official local government recognition for Jazz Month activities.

There’s information about the campaign and specific suggestions for
MUSICIANS | ORGANIZATIONS & BUSINESSES | JOURNALISTS & MEDIA MAKERS | EDUCATORS
at the new JazzApril website created by the Jazz Journalists Association in support of Jazz Appreciation Month and International Jazz Day.

YOU can participate in JazzApril

Whoever you are, wherever in the world you live, there's a way for you  to help spread the word about jazz during Jazz Appreciation Month (April) and Jazz Day (April 30)-- we're bundling both these celebrations together and calling it "JazzApril."

Whatever you want to call it, though, there's no doubt: APRIL IS JAZZ MONTH.

Check the pages on this site for specific suggestions about what you can do to tell the world.

THANKS AND WELCOME

Erin Boheme - What A Life ( Heads Up 2013)

2012 sophomore album from the Wisconsin-based Jazz vocalist. The album was produced by Michael Buble and features his touring band as her backing unit. What A Life is more than just "the next album." It's also the next chapter in the evolution of an artist who took her first steps in front of the entire world at a young age and continues to discover the richness and potential of her own voice and her own muse.

"The album's exploratory nature is propelled by Bublé's touring band, which serves as her backup unit throughout the ten tracks. The roster includes pianist Alan Chang (who was also a co-producer on the project), guitarist Dino Meheghin, bassist Craig Polasko and drummer Robb Perkins. An added string section brings a stirring emotional layer to some of the more intimate songs in the set." Concord Music

A must hear new album: Olivier Babaz - Midnight Cafeine (2013)

An exciting debut album coming from a skilled young musician with a broad and open mind to what modern jazz is today.

On "Midnight Cafeine" French composer and bass player Olivier Babaz voices a sensibility of his own, tastefully expressed in ten compositions joined by two excellent musicians Sylvain Ransy, piano and Mark Nelson on drums.

The songs seems united by the fluid melodicity of an unconventional movie score where darker episodes alternate with bursts of joy and exuberance with the bass driving the story from behind or diffused within the texture, always instilling a warm feeling into the stage.Olivier Babaz  playing acoustic and electric bass takes the lead at the right moment, he knows when to add accents or come forward, he wraps piano and drums in a sonic velvet aura that can be sophisticated or powerful without overpowering. Free form and melodicity flow hand in hand as a kaleidoscope of soundscapes, blues themes and sparkling improvisations.
"Midnight Cafeine", "The Road to Hearst"(superb arco touches) and "Frenetik" are among the most seductive tunes, but to name a few highlights is not enough, the album as a whole has a cohesive beauty to be appreciated over and over again.

Nicholas Payton - #BAM Live At Bohemian Caverns (BMF Records 2013)

This live album captures Grammy-winner's now legendary prowess on the trumpet - while simultaneously playing the Fender Rhodes. This is #BAM: Black American Music.

The evolution of Grammy-winning trumpeter Nicholas Payton continues on February 26 with the release of Nicholas Payton XXX #BAM Live at Bohemian Caverns on BMF Records.

Recorded at the historic Washington, D.C. club, Bohemian Caverns, on November 3, 2012, the album captures Payton's now legendary prowess on the trumpet – while simultaneously playing the Fender Rhodes piano. Featuring Vicente Archer on bass and Lenny White on drums, the Nicholas Payton XXX band's burning set includes compositions by Payton (The Backward Step, The African Tinge), the classic traditional "Frankie And Johnny," and Miles Davis (Drad Dog), Lenny White & Mike Clark (Catlett Out Of The Bag), and Thelonious Monk (Pannonica).

An accomplished multi-instrumentalist (in addition to the trumpet, piano, and keyboards, Nicholas plays bass, drums, tuba, trombone, clarinet and saxophone, etc.), Nicholas Payton adds another dimension to his musical achievement with the launch of his own imprint, BMF Records.

After years on major labels, Payton is bypassing the traditional label system for BMF Records. BMF Records is a natural extension of Nicholas Payton's musical journey, following the release of last year's studio set, Bitches. The 15-song, original vocal and R&B album laid the groundwork for the revolutionary, yet evident, idea that that music of the Black American diaspora are more similar than dissimilar. Black American Music, coined by Nicholas Payton, describes his and all music descending from the Black American experience, including spirituals, gospel, soul, blues, and R&B. Black American Music was created by Black people, but it belongs to everyone.

Nicholas Payton is the founder of the growing Black American Music awareness movement (#BAM). The genesis of #BAM is the public's reaction to 'On Why Jazz Isn't Cool Anymore' and subsequent ingenious posts published on his blog (http://nicholaspayton.wordpress.com) in November of 2011.

#BAM is the synthesis of Payton's entire collective musical history – a prodigious talent who began playing professionally at age nine, made his major label debut at 21, won his Grammy at 24, wrote a full symphony orchestra and is credited on over 120 recordings as a composer, arranger and/or special guest. An all-around musician, Nicholas Payton is widely considered one of the greatest artists of our time. His unmistakable musical genius is on wide display on #BAM Live at Bohemian Caverns.

Payton's "clarion trumpet, as well as his genre-defying solos, stood at the center of the music making...No descriptive label or category could be affixed to Payton's solos, which were as brashly original as they were technically imposing." - Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune (December 1, 2012)

DEJAN TERZIC - MELANOIA (Enja 2013)

Dejan Terzic drums
Hayden Chisholm saxophone
Achim Kaufmann piano
Ronny Graupe guitar
Dejan Terzic drums

Day dream, night dream, nightmare, short dream, ideal dream...

These are the topics, the group MELANOIA is about, founded in the summer of 2012 by the drummer and composer Dejan Terzic.

The highly active drummer has been since long part of the top acts of the European jazz scene. During the last years he has presented his highly acclaimed project “Underground”. ENJA RECORDS has also released his last CD “Diaspora”.

The newly founded ensemble deals with musical linkages, integrations, kind of dreams, day dreams, nightmares, multilayered structures and free implementations. MELANOIA focuses mostly on the dream and all its many intense and non tangible aspects. The quartet featuring four strong individualists that are part of Europe’s top-jazz-musicians swings between those structures and implementations. Those four artists create their music and compositions creatively. They all have drawn attention to themselves with diverse projects and recordings. The first CD of that bass-less quartet will be released in March 2013 by ENJA RECORDS.

This ensemble has been nominated for the “BMW-Welt Jazz-Award 2013 – Leading Drums”

Soft Machine Legacy, new studio album "Burden Of Proof" is out now

The new SOFT MACHINE LEGACY's studio album"Burden Of Proof" is available now.
For CD info click here ==> BURDEN OF PROOF
For high res download click hear ==> BANDCAMP
Soft Machine Legacy makes their most powerful statement to date, delivering an album of epic proportions and their first studio output since 2007's Steam. Infectious grooves, undeniably hip vibes and sizzling performances dominate the outing, as the veteran progressive music masters continue to break new ground and offer listeners yet more previously-unseen facets of their dynamic musical persona. Featuring some intriguingly-inviting new writing, the album is a breath of fresh air for progressive music and a bold furtherance of the true adventurous essence that is the legacy of the great Soft Machine. It doesn't just offer the suggestion of venturing through ground previously untread -- by any of the Soft Machine incarnations -- it levels everything in its path on the way!
Broad in its scope and ambition, but sensitive, probing and playful in its delivery, Burden of Proofprovides more than ample evidence that the legends remain at the top of their game, both individually and collectively. The group's two lead voices -- guitarist John Etheridge and saxophonist Theo Travis (currently touring worldwide with Steven Wilson)-- are in exceptionally fine form, whether gracefully enunciating a melody line in the pocket or dancing madly on the fringe. Also evident is the rock-solid anchoring of drummer John Marshall and bassist Roy Babbington, who keep proceedings tight and flowing throughout. Whether tip-toeing or stampeding, Soft Machine Legacy are as unified, focused and finely-honed as they've ever been -- delivering their crispest, most sparkling new material to date, in an undeniably inspired, unrelenting session. This is a fabulous, vital effort: a potent, impacting album encompassing the great spirit and aggressive pioneering approach championed by their namesake predecessors. For all fans of progressive music, the Canterbury scene, and the Softs, this superlative studio session is immediately 'essential' -- and easily the Legacy's finest, most high-reaching outing.
Stay tuned for more info about SML gigs in France, Italy, Germany, UK and Japan, all to be announced soon.
All the best
Yours in Music

Jasper Somsen Group released “Sardegna”

European Jazz with an American bite!

SARDEGNA is a profound personal narrative of Jasper Somsen about the most constant thing in life – the change. The short stories on this album are about the moments we all face: searching for the meaning of life, the loss of dear ones, love and friendship. Jasper approaches them with patience and grace, yet retaining the organic emotional palette one can’t hide.

This second album of Somsen brings you to the rhythm of life on Sardegna Island with a mellow vibe, enriched by touching cello entries and deep bass solos. Poetic and sentimental, sad and cheerful.

The compositions do not only refer to Sardinia itself, but some are much more connected to the vast history of European and American jazz, or even maybe to another island yet to be discovered… An island created by passion, imagination and poetry. Akin to other migrants to Sardinia, exploring the island. This is also what Jasper does by releasing this album: creating new memories and whispering new destinations in our ears.

Jasper Somsen started his group in 2009. In October 2010 he released his first album "Dreams, Thoughts and Poetry" at Challenge Records. All release concerts were sold out and the album received excellent reviews.

Chris Hyson - Little Moon Man (Feat. Kit Downes) (2013)

A set of original music written by Chris Hyson, this music is written for the piano and is played by the critically acclaimed, 'Mercury Prize' nominated pianist, Kit Downes.
I spent a lot of time experimenting with different musicians and instrumentation to find the right combination for this music. After some time, I came to realise that it was best suited to being played on the piano alone, as that's where I spend a lot of my time composing - alone on the piano. When I write music, I try to be as honest as possible, drawing influence from my own personal life experiences, and the relationships I have with others. All the music is written from a place of love. I hope you enjoy it

Lisa Clark Augis - The Colossal Joy Project (2013)

Jazz vocal eclectic mix of gifted singers and world class instrumentalists; covering classic tunes from Fats, to Pops, to Stevie Wonder, and infused with a colossal amount of positivity, love, and joy; it's "motivational jazz" for the whole family!
For a while now, I have wanted to create a recording filled with positive music. No "broken heart" songs, no "I can't live without whoever" songs, no "life stinks" songs, just powerfully happy songs! We encourage children to be more upbeat, yet the example we set with the music we listen to, and the emotions associated with it, can often be the opposite. It has become cool to be mean and angry, and frowned upon to be happy and loving. Many people must take anti-depressants and anxiety medicines. When I listen to the news or watch television, I quickly understand why so many of us are so sad. We have a serious deficiency of "happy"! I believe that it is up to us as individuals to embrace the joy that we are all capable of experiencing and sharing. That is what this project is all about! I have experienced first hand what the power of positivity through music can do. I definitely felt it while creating music with the wonderful group of people involved in this recording. These are some very accomplished musicians and singers, some very dear friends, and each and every one of them has a colossal heart! (This recording features duets with great local Columbus based artists like vocalist Kay Harris of Sirens and Kerry Henderson of the Floorwalkers, to national artists like Dwight Adams (trumpeter for Stevie Wonder). There is a wonderful feeling of positivity that we share when we are creating music together! I really wanted to capture that energy and pass it along!
About me: Lisa is a Vocalist/Jazz Educator and Preservationist. She currently teaches, lectures, and performs around the midwest area as a freelance vocalist, with the Erik Augis Trio, and with her own group, The Colossal Joy Project. She is also a performer and co-founder of Jazz for Kids, a group that teaches early-elementary age children about jazz though in-school programs, residencies, and community concerts throughout the area. Lisa has well over twenty years of extensive performance experience, and has been a featured vocalist with many wonderful bands including The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, The Columbus Symphony Orchestra, and The Columbus Jazz Orchestra. Additionally, she has been featured vocally in venues which include but are not limited to: performances nationally in a huge variety of jazz clubs and theaters, Chamber Jazz, Firehouse Jazz, and Bungalow Jazz concert series, as well as a variety of jazz and music festivals. Her first solo CD, Girl Blue, received national radio airplay and many positive reviews, and her voice has been heard on a variety of radio and television jingles. The Colossal Joy Project is Lisa's second recording project. CDBABY

Eight years after his brother's untimely death, guitarist and composer Bill Horvitz pays homage to Philip with his latest release, The Long Walk, set for national release, April 2.  Special tribute performances are being planned for the SF Bay Area (March) as well as New York (June).

The Long Walk is a suite of eight pieces composed by Bill Horvitz for the 17-piece Bill Horvitz Expanded Band as a tribute to his youngest brother Philip Horvitz, who passed away suddenly of a heart failure in 2005 at the age of 44. Philip was an inspired writer, director, actor, dancer, and choreographer, who worked primarily in San Francisco and New York. The music includes a wide range of styles drawing on jazz, funk, folk, and new music. The compositions are tightly composed and arranged and contain sections of conducted improvisation. Each piece relates in some way to a part of Philip's life.

After Philip died, Horvitz wanted to compose music as a tribute to him, and about a year after his death, began hearing the beginnings of new compositions that felt in different ways related to Philip's life. As Horvitz worked tirelessly on his compositions, the music evolved and he began adding instruments. The resulting pieces are a collection of jazz, rock, folk, classical, and funk-influenced works that have come out of the enormous range of emotions Horvitz has felt since his brother's untimely death, "I did not compose this music with literal ideas about Philip in mind, but found elements that related to him as each piece grew." For example, "Child Star" with all the appropriate fanfares, refers to a time very early in Philip's life when he often performed for his family, "Philip would create theatrical pieces, command performances based on Broadway musicals, for which he printed and sold tickets. He would dance in the living room and lip sync or sing along with recordings, all highly choreographed and rehearsed to a tee."

Bill Horvitz has spent nearly 40 years combining composition and improvisation and expanding the voice of the guitar in both large and small ensembles. Between 1978 and 1988 he lived and worked in New York City, where he worked with a long list of composers and musicians. Horvitz' lengthy and varied experience in the realms of jazz, rock, classical, folk, and new music have resulted in an entirely original compositional voice-a voice that is forceful and innovative, yet always intelligently accessible. As a guitarist, Horvitz stretches the boundaries of guitar music and points it in new and exciting directions. He fuses traditional and extended techniques in a most inventive way; his strikingly personal instrumental vision endows his music with an infinite array of tonal color.

The pieces in The Long Walk combine through-composed, tightly arranged music with a variety of settings for improvisation. Exercising his creative writing abilities with hisExpanded Band proves to an exhilarating experience for Horvitz, "The instrumentation includes brass, winds, strings, and rhythm section and enables me to shift between a traditional jazz sound and something less conventional." The Expanded Band includes a stellar line-up of some of the San Francisco Bay Area's (and beyond) finest musicians, who add an enormous amount to the music already on the page as excellent readers, interpreters, and improvisers.

The improvised portions commonly begin with one or two soloists and build from there as directed by conductor Omid Zoufonoun. Hailing from a renowned family of Persian musicians, instrumentalist and composer Zoufonoun studied conducting in Vienna for three years.

When performed live, Horvitz introduces the pieces with brief stories about Philip, connecting the music to him. These stories have a profound impact on the audience as well as the musicians. The stories are poignant, evocative, and often quite humorous. Band members play the music with increased passion, and following the concerts, audience members speak of being deeply moved, sharing similar experiences of loss of their own. This, for Horvitz, is the most significant part of the project-how the combination of story and music touches people, uniting all in the human experience. Writer David Templeton said, "The program has universal appeal, beautifully illustrating how the loss of someone very close can be turned into a work of healing, acceptance, and love."

The first Expanded Band performances came in the fall of 2006 in San Francisco and Sebastopol, California. The original ensemble included twelve musicians, and by the spring of 2007, the ensemble grew to 20 and performed the music in New York City at Roulette. In 2009 Horvitz had yet another vision for his Expanded Band, opting to revise the music extensively, add a new piece, and slightly alter the instrumentation. From this the ensemble came into existence as it is today, with 17 musicians and a conductor. The music was recorded in 2011 at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA.

In addition to leading and playing in The Bill Horvitz Expanded Band, since 2004, he has sung and played guitar, banjo, and ukulele with TONE BENT, a folk duo with his wife, composer, musician and singer Robin Eschner. Their first release, Say What You Will, has been described as "a roaring ride through the heartland of human experience." They're second release Angels In the Kitchen will be released in the spring of 2013. Horvitz also leads and composes for the instrumental trio, The Skerries, with bassist Scott Walton and drummer Tom Hayashi. He is a founding member of Take Jack, a nine-member vocal and instrumental band and has composed music for theater, film, dance, art installation, and spoken word.
