The whole record industry, of course, is ailing, but jazz has a special place in the infirmary. In 2011, jazz recordings made up a hair over 3 percent of albums sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan — and that’s counting watered-down forms like “smooth jazz.” The year before, the numbers were significantly worse. In fact, jazz record sales are so low that a pro forma Christmas record by Michael Buble — who sings over a wash of elevator music and is only a jazz artist by generous definition — made up almost a quarter of the total jazz sales in 2011, creating the illusion that the music had experienced a huge growth spurt. (The 11.1 million jazz albums that sold last year mean that, all things being equal, for every person who bought just one jazz record, 27 did not. Similarly, for everyone who bought two jazz records, 54 people purchased nothing.)

Ablaye Cissoko & Volker Goetze - Amanke Dionti ( Motema 2012)
"The music that German-born and New York City-based trumpeter Volker Goetze and Senegalese vocalist and kora player Ablaye Cissoko create, transcends both geographic and musical boundaries. When the duo first came together for their 2008 debut, Sira, their collaboration resulted in a unique musical synthesis that fused the timeless tradition of the storyteller/griot with a modern perspective. On their Motema Music debut, Amanke Dionti (May 8), Goetze and Cissoko have once again set out on an spiritual sonic journey, one that ranges from the desert and coast of West Africa to the urban landscapes of New York and Paris and which addresses themes of our ancient spiritual roots, and our hurried, dehumanized modern strife. In the tradition of the griot, Cissoko attempts to mend our souls with music, and with Goetze as his partner and champion, he succeeds, as their recordings are truly soul soothing." - motema
BOOK: Miles Davis: The Complete Illustrated History
Here is the illustrated history of Miles Davis, the world’s most popular jazz trumpeter, composer, bandleader, and musical visionary. Davis is one of the most innovative, influential, and respected figures in the history of music. He’s been at the forefront of bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, and jazz-rock fusion, and remains the favorite and best-selling jazz artist ever, beloved worldwide.
He’s also a fascinating character—moody, dangerous, brilliant. His story is phenomenal, including tempestous relationships with movie stars, heroin addictions, police busts, and more; connections with other jazz greats like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonius Monk, John Coltrane, Gil Evans, John McLaughlin, and many others; and later fusion ventures that outraged the worlds of jazz and rock.
United Jazz + Rock Ensemble Second Generation -Wolfgang Dauner United 2 (Timba 2012)
The fans surely didn’t expect that: after the United Jazz + Rock Ensemble had done their farewell tour in 2002, everyone had assumed that really was the end of the famous formation. So the surprise was all the bigger and better when there were new signs of life, albeit with a major change of generation. The team was much younger: only Wolfgang Dauner and Dave King were still there out of the original line-up. Yet although the team has changed, the group still breathes the spirit of the founding generation; their love of experimentation and discovery is still there and the reformed ensemble wants to go onstage in concert halls and at jazz festivals from early 2012. The UJRE will be the highlight of this year’s Jazz Lights in Oberkochen. Another appearance is planned for May in Stuttgart, at the SWR Broadcasting Corporation’s summer festival; the SWR will be sponsoring and promoting the live event. Wolfgang Dauner has now been highly active on the scene for more than fifty years. Stuttgart’s great son first got talked about in the 1960s with the avant-garde group Et Cetera and their first record releases; later he became well known as the leader of his own bands and as an influential jazz musician alongside Jean-Luc Ponty, Sugar Cane Harris or Larry Coryell. For many years he was duo partner to Albert Mangelsdorff and Charlie Mariano. His LP “A Jazz Tune I Hope” with Albert Mangelsdorff, Eddy Gomez and Elvin Jones was a musical highlight. Today, at 76, Dauner the pianist and composer is as active as as he always was. At an age when others are enjoying their retirement he’s not thinking of stopping. So he took on the United Jazz + Rock Ensemble’s new project with his usual youthful élan.Termidor Musikverlag & Timba Records

A beautifully captured recording of an intimate live performance by a distinguished performer in varied genres. Reflects a wide range of songs, including Matt Herskowitz s original compositions, his arrangements of classical pieces, and his favorite jazz covers.
Justin Time Records
As a follow up to 2010’s acclaimed Jerusalem Trilogy on Justin Times Records, pianist-composer Matt Herskowitz showcases the art of solo piano on Upstairs, recorded before a live audience in the intimate setting of Montreal’s Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill. Drawing on his classical training and his deep love of jazz, Herskowitz presents an artful blend of musical styles with direct nods to Michel Petrucciani, Dave Brubeck, George Gershwin, J.S. Bach and Robert Schumann along the way. “I wanted the choice of pieces to reflect a broad range of what I do, including my own compositions, arrangements of classical pieces, and my favourite jazz covers,” writes Herskowitz in the liner notes to Upstairs

Miles Davis-Live In Europe 1969: The Bootleg Series Vol 2(3 CDs/ 1 DVD)(Legacy 2013)
LIVE IN EUROPE 1969 lives up to the Miles Davis Bootleg Series mission of presenting live performances that are previously unreleased, have previously only been bootlegged, or are very rare. This new set is the first collection of Miles's Third Great Quintet, the "Lost" Band of 1968-1970 with Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, and Jack DeJohnette at their peak (they were never recorded in the studio). The album captures the short-lived quintet in three separate concert settings, starting with two full-length (one hour-plus) sets at the Antibes Jazz Festival in France, in Stockholm as part of "The Newport Jazz Festival In Europe," and completed with a stunning 46-minute performance at the Berlin Philharmonie, filmed in color

Alex Sipiagin-Overlooking Moments (Criss Cross 2013)
A very prolific member of the Criss Cross family, trumpeter Alex Sipiagin has logged in nine releases as a leader for the label over the span of 12 years. He is also a vital member of the all-star collective Opus Five, that group's most recent effort being the critically acclaimed Pentasonic(CRC 1351). For his tenth session at the helm, Sipiagin has delivered his most freewheeling recital to date. An integral member of the trumpeter's inner circle since his 2000 debut, Steppin' Zone (CRC 1202), the always exciting Chris Potter fills out the front line on saxophones. And for the first time, Sipiagin has opted for an ensemble sans piano or guitar. With frequent collaborators Scott Colley on bass and Eric Harland on drums, the results over eight original compositions are as fresh and contemporary as they come. http://www.crisscrossjazz.com

Buone Feste con il nuovo album di Roberto Olzer in formato flac 24 bit /88.2khz
ROBERTO OLZER TRIO STEPPIN' OUT

Jazz Superstars Rick Braun and Richard Elliot Turn Up the Heat in Detroit this Valentine's Day
This will be the first premier jazz concert of the year featuring two legendary contemporary jazz artist and hosted by one of Detroit's own. You do not want to miss this one.
Valentine’s Day is about love and romance. Trumpeter Rick Braun and sax man Richard Elliot promise to make this Valentine’s Day even hotter. Circle February 14th on your calendar because that is the date the hit men will deliver a cool-jazz treat in what will be the first premiere smooth jazz event of the year.
With 24 solo albums between them and a massive catalog of chart-topping radio hits, the thrilling collaboration between Braun and Elliot has been one of the top shows to ever tour the country. They have toured together for years and have made guest appearances on each other’s records. “We’ve had so much fun playing together live that it was time for us to get together musically,” declared Elliot. “We have different approaches yet they are complementary.
Teaming up with Family Circle Productions, a local production company, the event will be hosted by Detroit’s own jazz saxophonist Deon Yates with special guest, Lansing, MI saxophonist Phil Denny.
On Thursday, February 14, 2013 Yates will be hosting “Valentine’s with R n R,” at 8 p.m., at The Scottish Rite Cathedral inside the Masonic Temple 500 Temple Avenue Detroit, MI 48201. Tickets on sale now at the Masonic Temple box office, all Ticketmaster outlets.
Yates began his career performing for Detroit mayor Coleman A. Young while still a student at Remus Robinson Middle School on Detroit’s eastside. Yates collaborated with chart topping smooth jazz guitarist Nick Colionne, vocalist Maysa Leak (Incognito), and Detroit “Soul Trumpeter” Lin Rountree to complete his debut national album, “Spotlight.” This latest project solidifies his place in the jazz world following in the footsteps of his mentor and Sax Dakota endorsement mate Richard Elliot.
“The purpose of the concert is to show that good things can be found in and still come out of the city,” said Yates. “Not only do we want to bring names to the city, we want to introduce the city to some of the, sometimes unrecognized, talented artist from the region.”
Family Circle Productions Inc. is an independent media services and production company located in Detroit, created to provide affordable media services to small businesses and nonprofit organizations to help them compete in today’s media market without breaking the bank. Hal Galper Trio – Airegin Revisited (Origin Records 2012)
“...the high level of integration and communication the trio displays is rare and quite thrilling to experience...”
- DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE
Following up on what's been called the veteran pianist's finest recording to date, 2011's "Trip the Light Fantastic," Galper and his trio offer another exhilarating set of music, further defining the very personal "rubato" style of collective performance they've developed over the last six years. From an intimate "Embraceable You," to the closing, high-flying take of Sonny Rollins' "Airegin," Galper, bassist Jeff Johnson, and drummer John Bishop, display a singular group aesthetic, fully grounded in the language of bop while always in pursuit of new possibilities.
"Bishop's drums sizzle and detonate unpredictably; Johnson's bass rumbles; and the piano notes careen with a scintillating, headlong freedom..." - All About Jazz

Frank Wess & Johnny Coles - Two At The Top 2CD (Uptown Records 2012)
(2-CD set) Frank Wess describes the 1983 Uptown studio recording Two At The Top with Johnny Coles by saying, ''That's one of the best efforts I ever did.'' Wess and Coles first appeared together for Uptown on the Philly Joe Jones Dameronia album, To Tadd With Love. Their collaboration as sidemen with the drummer morphed into Two At The Top and they subsequently appeared live with the quintet at Sweet Basil in New York City as well as Yoshi's in Oakland, CA. Disc one presents the original Rudy Van Gelder recording with one new tune (Tadd Dameron's A Blue Time) and 5 unissued alternates. Disc two features a live set from their 1988 date at Yoshi's backed by an outstanding West Coast rhythm section - Two At The Top indeed!
Studio personnel are saxophonist Frank Wess, Trumpeter Johnny Coles, pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Reggie Johnson and drummer Kenny Washington. The live disc features trumpeter Johnny Coles, saxophonist Frank Wess, pianist Smith Dobson, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Donald 'Duck' Bailey.

Irene Reid - The Queen of the Party (Savant 2012)
From her days singing with the Count Basie band as a replacement for Joe Williams, to her Indian summer of renewed popularity, Irene Reid always lived up to her moniker, The Queen of Uptown Blues. Like Dinah Washington & Esther Phillips, Irene had a church background and never lost that divine intensity or power to convey the emotions in a lyric. Her most notable post-Basie gig was playing the wicked witch on Broadway in "The Whiz." Here is a program featuring Irene, the Charles "Mighty Burner" Earland, Eric Alexander and the rest of the crew doing what Irene did best: the Uptown Blues.

Matthieu Boré - Roots (BONSAI MUSIC 2012)
Jelly Roll Morton wrote, ''Any music can be played in jazz, since you know how to do it. No matter what you play but the way you play it.'' This famous quotation describes the music of French jazz vocalist Matthieu Bore and the direction of the repertoire of his new album, Roots, perfectly. The album includes a mix of original works and pop standards in a fascinating blend that is easy on the ear. Bore reworks an array of hits from the 80s (favorites of his youth) such as ''Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go'' (George Michael) and ''Girls & Boys'' (Prince), giving them a Rhythm 'n Blues and soul-jazz sound.

Mimis Plessas & Christos Rafalides - We Two (Emarel Music 2012)
It was a great honor and pleasure to have Mimis Plessas, Evi Siamanda, and Christos Rafalides here at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
The two full houses of enraptured listeners gave both their performances standing ovations.
Mimis Plessas is one of the most lyrically compelling composers of our age, and Evi Siamanda has a radiantly expressive voice that found new dimensions of feeling in all the material she explored with Mimis on piano and the creative virtuosity of Christos Rafalides on vibes. A night we will all remember and treasure.Thank you for all you do. --Todd Barkan, Programming Director / Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola / Jazz at Lincoln Center, New York
When Christos asked me if we could play something together, I responded favorably. But after listening to his version of a tune I love, All The Things You Are , adapted to a 7/8 time signature, I told him without hesitation: Son, with your talent, the only thing I can play with you is chess. This is how the legendary Mimis Plessas describes his first meeting with Christos Rafalides. In the music world two artists performing or recording together is something that happens all the time. Nothing more trivial nothing more usual than a duet. But on rare occasions two artists click together so well; the match is so perfect, that the duet becomes anything but usual, anything but trivial. It s a perfect match. It s magic.
Mimis Plessas and Christos Rafalides were born in the same corner of the world about half a century apart. They walked the same hills, swam the same waters and listened to the same sounds. At some point or another they both sat on the same bar stools of jazz clubs in the village and performed on the same stages. Just at different times. So, when the two got together, Mimis Plessas hitting the first note on the piano and Christos Rafalides on the vibraphone, amazing music emerged music composed so brilliantly, that although originally arranged for traditional instrumentation and vocals, it retains all its freshness and fervor in these brand new interpretations.
We Two, the first encounter of two outstanding virtuosos. We Two, talent that bridges generations, music that transcends time. We Two recorded so that we too can feel the magic.
Enjoy.
